At the night before the premiere Dorothy Brock breaks her ankle and one of the chorus girls Peggy Sawyer tries to take over her part. Featuring incredible dance choreography from the master Busby Berkeley 42nd Street was Oscar Nominated for Best Picture and Best Sound but failed to win either award.
Advantages: Inexpensive drinks promos and entry, good music, central location, friendly staff, seating provided Disadvantages: Decor isn't as 'plush' as some other clubs, if you're bothered about that sort of thing!

The price of drinks is fairly standard for a club of this kind. The range is pretty much limited to alcopops, spirits and mixers in plastic cups, or beers and ciders in bottles - pints are not served here! Each night has a different drinks promotion, which is usually a choice between one flavour of alcopop, vodka and mixer, or one brand of beer, for £1 each - very easy on the wallet.
Combine this with the entry price offers and you're in for a fun, cheap night out! Depending on the time you arrive, whether or not you have a student card and the day of the week, admission prices range from £3 to £6. However, students who arrive before 10:30pm will get in free. But don't despair if you're not a student! 42nd Street's website have a different flyer for each club night - print off one of these and you'll also get in free before 10:30pm. I've done this in the past and it does work! Be warned though - on busier nights (Friday and Saturday) you may find yourself queuing to get in as everyone else will have the same idea as you and will be trying to get in for free, so if you're determined to have your night out on the cheap, turn up just before doors open! As this is Manchester you may want to have a hooded coat or umbrella with you just in case it rains, which it almost inevitably will if you have to queue for more than a minute or two, lovely.
The club's website can be found at www.42ndstreetnightclub.co.uk - visit this for up to date info on prices, entry times and each night's theme. The website also has a mailing list - signing up to this gives you the chance to obtain 'queue jump' passes and free entry as well as alerting you to the latest goings on.
The door staff at 42nd Street are usually quite strict about ID, which, as a legal drinker myself, I'm perfectly happy about - but they're also friendly with it, which makes a nice change. Unless you're underage trying it on with them, in which case you deserve it really don't you?! Even if you're well above the legal age I would advise you to take ID anyway as you can never be too careful - I personally get IDed there as a 23 year old and have known people up to the age of 26 to get asked for ID as well! If you're queuing to get in they will usually check your ID before you go in to save time.
Once you're safely inside, you can check your aforementioned coat and umbrella into the cloakroom for £1 a throw. If you're the sort of person who likes to make a quick getaway at the end of the night, a word of advice - go collect your belongings from the cloakroom before the last song ends or you may find yourself queuing for another 20 minutes, seriously frustrating when all you want to do is go get your chips'n'mayo and hit the sack!
The dress code is fairly relaxed - go as casual as you like (no tracksuit bottoms or football strips though, but I'd like to hope you'd make more effort than that anyway!) or get on your best party gear and go mad with the glitter, the choice is yours and whatever you decide you won't feel out of place. The general fashion theme, unsurprisingly enough, is indie-flavoured in keeping with the music - lads in their shirts, cardies or zip-up Adidas tops, girls in their skinny jeans or leggings with tunic tops.
The club is decently sized, all on one floor, with two bars located either side of the dance floor. Toilets are fairly average - not spotless but what nightclub has spotless toilets?! There is a fair amount of seating provided which is handy when you've had one too many (drinks or dances, take your pick!) and fancy a breather. Decor isn't the fanciest, compared to the city's more spacious 5th Avenue for example, but when you're at an indie club do you really expect much else, or particularly care? Put it this way, I've definitely seen my fair share of far dirtier dives. The important thing is, 42s has a great atmosphere and definitely has its own particular 'feel'. Some clubs can feel a little intimidating or uneasy at times, or you can sometimes feel a little self-conscious in certain places, but I've never experienced that here. Each time I've been I've had a really enjoyable night out - the music is good, no one looks at you funny because you're dancing and enjoying yourself, the crowd and staff are friendly and unpretentious, and most importantly I can get through the whole night on less than a tenner thanks to the club's fantastic offers!
Advantages: fair drink prices, vending machine, very clean Disadvantages: samey music, can get quite busy, not enough seating
...I wanted to go to 42nd Street and I had always heard good things so I decided to head on down. Its situated on bootle St in deansgate just off the main road. The entrance is plainly just a door with the flatboars sign with the 42nd street logo so if you didnt know what youwas looking for it could be pretty hard to find. The club is upstairs of the building so there are a few stairs and therefore not really suitable for those in a wheelchair or difficulties ... ...that bad, I paid £4 after 10:30pm with an NUS card which is about the same as 5th Avenue and other clubs. The dancefloor is located in the middle of the room between two bars and lit up with UV lights and some disco so its quite dark but you're still able to see. The bar provides a selection of drinks, mostly bottles so you cant' have a full pint of strongbow like i requuested and the prices aren't that bad. About £1.50 for an alcopop and £1.90 for ...

...night, then pop along to 42nd street just off deansgate and you'll not go amiss.
This night aimed at students is very popular because they play all types of music from the beatles to fatboy slim and even the prodigy if you ask the DJ nicely. Drinks are a very cheap 1 pound on a tuesday, YES 1 pound for most drinks and free entry before 10:30 - with a flyer :-)
The location of 42nd Street is easy to find as it is just of deansgate near the bootle ... ...I haven't seen any.
The atmosphere is friendly and there is always a happy vibe in the club and the dress code is totally relaxed apart from jogging bottoms are not allowed but baggy combats and shirts are the order of the day for most people.
There are also many other nights available with Wednesdays being the Funky kinda night and the best indie music money can get ya on a friday and Sat night ...

Advantages: Comfy seats Disadvantages: Enthusiastic door staff
42nd Street is a bit like the Venue with seats! The club itself is to be found just off the town hall end of deansgate near the model shop.
It originally opened as a gay bar being named after the gay street in New York, but it is a straight club these days. The playlist of a weekend is predominantly indie, pretty much the same list of favourites as most indie clubs in town. You can often get a pound of entrance fee if you find a relevant flyer to ... ...of nooks and crannies to explore though not to the extent of the sorely missed Banshee.
You have a choice of bars and the toilet facilities are good. There is a cloakroom which charges a modest fee and will even sell you a promotional 42nd St. T-Shirt. ...

Advantages: Upbeat, feelgood viewing Disadvantages: Not the most original story
"In the heart of little old New York, you’ll find a thoroughfare…"
Or so the song goes anyway! A year ago I had never even heard of 42ndStreet, but when I started university this time last year I joined a society which was staging a production of it. In my audition I was asked if I knew the show at all and my (incredibly stupid) answer to this was “No, but I know a song called 42ndStreet” which I proceeded to sing, only to be informed (rather snidely) that it was actually from the show. Yes, this is the true extent of my idiocy!
Anyway, on with the show! 42ndStreet is a typical ‘show within a show’ musical, concerning the backstage dramas and stormy relationships between cast members. The central character of the show is Julian Marsh, a previously successful Broadway director who is ...
Advantages: Get your picture taken with Barack! Disadvantages: Not worth the money, feels all thrown together
I have never been to Madame Tussauds in London so on my recent trip to New York me and my boyfriend decided the visit the one there as its located at West 42ndStreet, between 7th and 8th Avenues, Times Square and we walked past it every day of our trip.
We went to the attraction on a Monday and we only had to queue for about 5 minutes to get our tickets, they also have are fast track queues for people who have booked online or had the New York City Pass.
Our tickets cost $35 and we had the all access pass which included the following:
General admission to Madame Tussauds NY
SCREAM
Cinema 4D movie featuring Sponge Bob Squarepants
Madame Tussauds Story
Behind the Scenes
On reflection we should have brought the cheaper tickets at $25 as we only saw the waxworks themselves.
Once we had our tickets we walked upstairs where we had ...

we as a family stayed here for 3 nights - we joined the starwood preferred guest club so to get points, upgrades and deals, we got 3 nights for the price of 2 and paid something like $600 for the stay, we also got upgraded to a higher floor
The hotel itself is ideally situated just one block down from times square, it's in a very good area and it's safe, if you go up 43rd street towards times square you are sort of round the back to the theaters where there are some tramps sleeping but they are harmless and the police are always about - if you are worried about this at all then go up 42ndstreet instead. The hotel is a bit ugly from the outside, it's seems to be trying to make a statement but it misses on so many levels, it just looks like an unfinished 80's style building
anyhow, location is great, the hotel itself is big ...
