Before you decide to book this hostel you should ask yourself one question, "Do I need to be in a clean environment to have a good time?" If the answer to this is yes, then I would urge you not to stay here.
However, if you can bring yourself to enjoy the amazing buffet breakfast, downstairs bar serving their own beer in typical stein measures and can just being grateful you have a bed to sleep on, inspite of the general mess of the rooms/toilet/showers, then you wont find a better place.
Firstly this hostel is massive, and you only really get a feel for how many people are staying here with you when it comes to breakfast. No matter what time you decide to rise and shine, the breakfast room is full to bursting (mainly with Australians it often seems) it must hold about 50 people and is open for 3 hours so that should give you a general idea.
When you get to the front of the que a feast greats you, aswell as the general cereal and toast options there are also a variety of cold meats, cheeses, and breads, aswell as eggs, and pate. Accompanying this is good coffee or tea and two types of juice. After a night of German excess this is the perfect antidote.
The resturant doubles as a bar in the evening with a small beer garden. The bar staff are friendly and obviously speak very good English, and they offer their own draught beer aswell as Dunkels from a bottle. It is alot cheaper than you will find anywhere else in Munich, especially if you can hold on to the rather flimsy wristband that is handed to you when you check in. This will allow you happy hour drinking and means you can get a full stein for about 4.50 euros, compared to the average of 7 euros in the rest of the City.
If you are going to spend the night at the hostel the bar is literally the only place you should be. Dont try to get an early night as there seems a constant flow of excitable young people milling around the hallways and although they say no noise after 11pm, this doesnt appear to be followed through.
The rooms themselves are very small, I booked a twin which turned out to be a bunk bed, which although the beds were tiny themselves they took up the majority of the space. Although the sheets were clean the bed itself hadnt been wiped down for a while and, horribly, still showed the past glories of a previous guest.
The toilets were even worse, a constant smell from the moment you enter, doors on cubicles that only lock with great difficulty, urine spattered floors and seats, and according to my girlfriend that goes double for the ladies.
The trick is to remain fairly drunk most of your time here (German beer is so pure this is really quite easy) and then you wont be a bit concerned with the silly issue of hygeine. If you can manage that then you'll have a fantastic time, but if not you would possibly be better off elsewhere.
