the hacienda was notorious in manchester for many years,. After its demise, 'manc' music carried on. with a vengeance and the indie revolution was with us to stay.
5th avenue continues to proviide many people with a quality night out., providing a wide array of music to cater for most 'alternative' tastes.
located close to town, 5 mins walk from oxford road, where the buses run 24 hours, the location is good. It is down the road from canal street where the gay community socialise, but you won't find many gays here!
5th ave is legend amongst students and weds has always been student night where the drinks are dirt dirt cheap. (you will get hammered on bottled stella or cheap vodka, guaranteed!).
The outside doesn't look too appealing, as it is merely a silver door with the name sign above it. The bouncers are pretty scary and won't take no aggro so be warned. You will probably pay between three and five quid to get in, depending in the night, this may have changed recently.
As you go downstairs, the first thing you notice is how dark it is. The next thing you notice is how loud the music is.
The great thing is the people. No-one gives a toss about what to wear and anything goes. There will be goths, hard rockers, liam gallacher wannabes, a group of student lads dressed the same and nicely dressed chicks as well. It is amazing how such a variety can fir into one club!
If you are pretentious then don't come here, it is not a pretty club with pretty people dancing perfectly. If you want to pull and you like the indie scene, this is probably one of the best places in manchester (This is speaking from my experiences!). As for dancing, most people do not dance in 5th ave, they just hold their bottle and sort of move from side to side (Think liam gallacher). Blatantly everyone is having an amazing time, which is why the atmosphere is so great.
As for the music on a weds night, it is a variety of music, oasis, stone roses, james, phonics, nikelback, the smiths, nirvana, rage. Usually they play student anthems such as 'billy jean' and 'build me up buttercup' and 'set you free' by n trance. It is cheesier than the other nights, but the music is 95% wicked anyway.
5th ave is a great clubbing experience, and is notorious in manchester for its music. The 'same music' is played every week, but people still go back week after week as it is such a cool place to go. But you will only like it is you like the indie scene, if not, you'll probably be better going elasewhere .
