architecture, is located next to the university, five kilometres from Madrid's center: Puerta del Sol, and four kilometres from Plaza de San Martin. The bright and airy guestrooms are contemporary in style and are accompanied by attractive wooden furnishings. All 48 of the rooms are completed with modern amenities such as wireless Internet access, direct dial phones and cable TV. Guests can also chose between smoking and non smoking rooms. Guests can taste traditional Mediterranean cuisine at the hotel restaurant, with its fancy atmosphere and formal style, which offers a range of Spanish tapas dishes. After a tiring day of sightseeing around Madrid's busy streets, guests can relax with a drink on the patio. The hotel caters for business guests too, with its conference rooms, event catering and wireless Internet access. For those keen to explore the city, Spain's capital has a remarkable collection of museums, galleries, parks and nightlife. Most tourists begin exploring Madrid at the Puerta del Sol, the official center of the city, which is five km from the hotel. South down Calle de San Martin is the Iglesia de San Gines, one of Madrid's oldest churches. The Plaza Mayor is Madrid's most famous square and nearby is the historic Plaza de la Villa with its 17th century town hall.

Advantages: Nice staff, clean, kettle in the room Disadvantages: The local area, rather expensive
This is yet another hotel stayed in when travelling with work.
It's a four star hotel (Ciao has it listed as a three star) and is located in the business district in Madrid. The Estadio Santiago Bernabeau, the home of Real Madrid football club is also very close by if you are interested in football. Public transport is very good-metro station and bus stop near by, the bus is one Euro into central Madrid and unlike London they have plenty of bus lanes and regular services-every 5 minutes. And no over-crowding or rubbish strewn everywhere!
The hotel itself is a typical sprawling 1980's concrete block. The surrounding area is a bit dodgy at night and opposite the hotel is a boarded up cinema. In fact the whole area is pretty much a concrete jungle and I would be careful with going out after dark as it's pretty deserted once ...
Advantages: Splendid architecture and surrounding nature Disadvantages: destinations are scattered and hard to reach by public transport
are unmatched anywhere near Madrid.
On the whole, you may only like to take a longer tour of the monastery if you are a fan of Renaissance architecture and arts. If you are not, then El Escorial is still worth a short detour, if only for the scenic drive through the wooded hills and the wonderful views towards and from the residence.
VALLE DE LOS CAÍDOS ? @@@ Remains of a Dark Period.
Valle de los Caídos is located 8 miles north of El Escorial, on the M600 road which leads into the Sierra Guadarrama. It is a huge funeral for the victims of the Spanish Civil War. Although the graves are not visible ? except that of former dictator Franco ? there are over 40,000 buried here. A Basilica and the huge Santa Cruz Monument is the centre of the sight, the latter is a 150 metres high cross which overlooks the whole valley.
The whole ...

Advantages: Couldn't see any Disadvantages: dirty, busy, grey, dull, congested
I have just returned from a short break in Madrid. I had been told in advance that Madrid was a brilliant city and that I would love it. I suppose everyone is different, but I could not find one thing I liked about it. I found it to be grey, dirty, run down, extremely busy, traffic constant almost everywhere...I really did not take to the place at all. The only good thing about it was the people, as always I found the Spanish people lovely and obliging, and more than willing to help out with language difficulties.
I was only there a short time, two days and did not have time to vist any places of interest, such as Museums or art gelleries, but I would normally be happy enough just wandering around new surroundings , taking in the atmosphere and ambience...however I found I felt terminally depressed in Madrid. All the streets looked ...
