I have read opinions and tests on this board and decided to use it in a system I was building for someone. Installing the 800MHz Athlon and all of the opther components was a breeze - as sadi before, it really is great having the jumperless design.

However, I was disappointed when the soundcard I'd installed refused to output any sound, despite the fact that there was no problems being reported in the Device Manager.

Looking in the discussion groups on Asus' site I found that I wasn't the only one with problems. All Soundblaster cards had the same problem with sound, regardless of on-board audio or not. My motherboard had no onboard sound and was the very latest release which provided support for Thunderbird processors.

Even stranger yet, I installed my own SB LIve value card and it worked! The problem card installed perfectly into my own machine, so it was definitely the motherboard to blame!

Apart from this very shoddy oversight, the board is fine, but I would not recommend it unles you want the on-board audio only version and do not want to upgrade to a true SoundBlaster card.

A Great Board, only one slight problem
Review of ASUS VIA KX133 Chipset K7V - mainboard - ATX - KX133 by SteveP

Advantages: Reliability, Speed, 4xUSB, ASUS support
Disadvantages: No support for TBird and Duron, slightly more expensive than some

...sites i settled on the ASUS K7V as the board of choice. The board is well designed and well made. Installation was a breeze thanks to the comprehensive manual which gives in depth descriptions of the jumper settings and BIOS setup. The jumper-free option, which allows the changing of parameters from the BIOS rather than requiring you to disassemble the case and rearrange jumpers is excellent, especially if you intend to attempt any overclocking. ...
...be tempted to wait until ASUS released a board based on VIAs new KT133 chipset which will support these faster processors. In summary, If you are buying an Athlon CPU now, there is IMHO no better board to choose, however if you have the luxury of being able to wait a few weeks then keep your eyes open for KT133 boards. ... ...consider AMD Althon with a Asus K7v motherboard they are stable, extremely quick compared to almost every other motherboard on the market (abit being the other). I have been building AMD for years now and its always been an up hill struggle with AMD CPU's and motherboards but thats all changed Mid 1999. I have had Pentium III 800 performing under par compared to an AMD 700. Why the motherboard is one of the most important aspects and this combined ... Read review
