Advantages: Beautiful, Italian, romantic Disadvantages: Very narrow roads and very hilly
...The Amalfi coast is possibly one of the most beautiful and romantic places in the world. We got engaged there, in Ravello, so it obviously holds a very special place in my heart. There are several towns which are beautiful to stay in. We were based in Positano which is split into 2 areas by a deep ravine. All hotels are ont eh cliff face with fantastic views out to sea. Positano can get a bit touristy in high season so I would recomend going in Spring time - late April through to early June. There are also many good places to eat to suit most budgets and a couple of very special hotels if your budget allows. Otherwise there are plenty of excellent guest houses which are clean and comfortable.
Amalfi itself is an historically interesting town and well worth a visit. As is Ravello on the top of the hills, famous for Wagner stories...

Advantages: Stunning views, Superb cuisine Disadvantages: Small beaches due to high cliffs
...to find hotels very cheaply either as the Amalfi coast is extremely popular amongst Europeans and rooms come at a premium. I actually found a cheap option in the smaller town just south of Amalfi, called Atrani. The hotel, or more appropriately dorm, was called A Scalinatella and was very near Atrani's main square. I can't recommend staying at the hostel, which is almost 10 miles west of town because I didn't stay there myself, but that is another budget option. But do try to stay on the coast for at least a couple of days rather than attempting day trips from Naples or Salerno. If you stay overnight in any of the towns along the coast, you will see that they are quite...

.... Although only a short distance from the Greyhound station, be careful when walking here in the dark - we found the station rather intimidating, and a taxi-driver tried to rip us off.
THE HOSTEL
The hostel is a beautifully converted 1885 mansion - it took ages to convince me that this was a hostel and not a top-class hotel!
The décor in the public areas is immaculate - wooden panelling everywhere, antique furniture and beautiful touches.
ROOMS
I stayed in a private room which was modern, clean and basic. The bed was comfortable - a kind of double bed with a single 'bunk' on top. The hostel has 5 private rooms available, and these don't cost much more than a dormitory.
The dormitory rooms are also clean and modern and the hostel has around 70 beds available. Bathrooms are shared and are located throughout the hostel.
