A Seta (The Arrow) specializes in supreme regional cuisine. It's almost midway between Funchal and Monte, 4km (2 1/2 miles) from either, along winding roads. The mountainside restaurant, a favorite with tour groups, is a tavern where you can order inexpensive yet tasty meals. The rustic decor incorporates burned-wood trim, walls covered with pinecones, and crude pine tables. First, a plate of homemade coarse brown bread still warm from the oven arrives at your table. Above each table is a hook with a long skewer of charcoal-broiled meat attached. You slip off chunks while mopping up juices with the crusty bread. There are three specialties: beef, chicken, and grilled dry codfish. Seasoned with olive oil, herbs, garlic, and bay leaves, these concoctions are called espetadas. Fried potatoes are always done well here (ask for some hot sauce).
Advantages: Lovely views Disadvantages: Not for families, ppl wantin lively hol or ppl who dislike walkin
...If you don't understand my title you will if you go to Madeira or have been, as the runway is in the sea......
I was told this whilst actually on the plane - great.....!!
Madeira is a great place for walking and relaxing. It is a small island, but to appreciate it fully it is a must to hire a car, as the roads are narrow and steep.
Funchal is the capital, and the only large town. You will find some nice shopping here.
A good place to visit, and I did very often, is Madeira Mall (not 100% sure on its name), there are loads of shops and eateries here.. Thought it was great here.
Me and my parents drove right around the island, and found a nice coastal village, with some shops and a nice resturant,
We also went and visited some traditional houses and in one village we were allowed into an elderly persons home - it was very tiny...

Advantages: Beautiful views, fantastic accommodtion and service Disadvantages: Very quiet, not much entertainment, no night life
...What a bargain! I paid less than £250 for this holiday in the luxurious and new Pestana Aparthotel, although in a very quiet area its only 15 minutes from the main city of Funchal and 10 minutes from the airport. The hotel provides a shuttle bus service between the hotel and Funchal daily until early evening, the surrounding countryside was beautiful and I can recommend the local pizza restaurant for a casual meal one evening, although we did get some local produce and had a few meals sitting on our balcony of an evening which was magical.
The accommodation was faultless, very high quality and the service was high, room was cleaned everyday but you will be lucky to see anyone doing it, they are very descreet, loved Madeira and would definitley revisit....

Advantages: amazing scenery, not very family or children oriented Disadvantages: no beaches, not very family or children oriented!
...I have always got Madeira, Majorca and Menorca confused, so when I got the opportunity to go on holiday to Madeira in January I had no idea where it was, let alone what it was like.
BACKGROUND
Madeira is an island (I just about guessed that), lying 380 miles west of Morocco and 260 miles north of the Canaries. The island is quite small and measures roughly 35 by 12 miles. Madeira is part of Portugal so Portugese is the predominant language.
LANDSCAPE AND CLIMATE
Madeira is volcanic in origin and a range of mountains up to 6,000 feet high run east to west across the island. Virtually the whole island is hilly which makes agriculture difficult and car journeys extremely ear-popping!
Because Madeira has a very stable climate, with temperatures rarely moving from the 16-24C band all year round, the island is lush with vegetation...

This is a beautiful hotel situated right at the end of the main promanade in Funchal. The views across the ocean, and into the city are perfect, with the sun setting over golden cliffs to the west in the evening towards the harbour. The hotel is situated more
