When we visited northern Spain a couple of years ago, Burgos was right at the top of the list of places to visit. This beautifully preserved medieval town is a fascinating destination, and not just for the many pilgrims who visit the imposing cathedral on their way to Santiago de Compostela along the Way of St. James (wandering around the old town, you will notice many of the scallop symbols set into the pavement or into the walls of houses to guide the faithful along the right path).

Our stay at the Abba Burgos hotel was without doubt a highlight of the three days we spent in Burgos - it's not often that I would say that about a hotel but this one really was excellent. I had booked on the internet without knowing anything much about the hotel - in fact, Abba Hoteles run a number of establishments across Spain and have also opened one in London now as well. The Abba Burgos is a four-star hotel, housed in beautifully restored building that formerly housed the Seminario Mayor, and is just a few hundred metres from the cathedral.

We arrived in Burgos on the train from Santander, just as night was falling. I had been wondering how to find the hotel - the tourist information was surely going to have closed for the evening and all I had was a print-out of the map from the website… but as the train pulled into Burgos station, you could clearly see the words 'ABBA BURGOS' picked out in blue lettering atop the white building on the high ground in the centre of town. It's about a 15-minute walk from the station up into the old town, but you'll have no problem finding this hotel, that's for sure. It is correspondingly simple to find if you are travelling by car too, as the Calle de Fernán González is just a couple of minutes' away from the main N120 road that connects Burgos with the A-1 motorway (and there are plenty of parking spaces available at the hotel too).

The staff at reception were, without exception, welcoming and friendly - and their proficiency in English meant that my inability to speak more than a few basic Spanish phrases was not a problem. Once we'd gone through the formalities of check-in, finding the rooms was as easy as expected - but the size of the rooms and the quality of the accessories and furnishings really did stand out. Tastefully decorated, the rooms are all equipped with air-conditioning (which really is a bonus when you go back for an afternoon siesta, an absolute must when the temperature in town reaches 40 degrees), a very comfortable bed, cable TV and a spacious, spotless bathroom.

From our room, we enjoyed great views out over the plateau to the south, and another plus point is that the hotel has its own swimming pool, so on both afternoons we were somewhat surprised to be the only guests taking advantage of this facility. There is also a small gym / fitness centre down by the pool, plus a secluded outdoor section where you can top up your tan and dry off after a swim in the pool.

The room price includes a very good buffet breakfast; standard hotel fare really with plenty of hot and cold options, but nothing to complain about! We didn't have an evening meal in the hotel restaurant, preferring to wander around the town and try out some of the local hostelries instead, but on the evening we arrived we did sit in the bar and try out a selection of snacks and tapas dishes on offer, along with a very refreshing and ice-cold beer or two.

We paid €75 per night for a double room, and as far as I can tell from the Abba Hoteles website, the special offer price is still at that level (wireless internet access is also available for a small fee in all rooms), which represents fantastic value for money when you consider all the extras and little luxuries that are included as standard. In short, if you visit this corner of northern Spain, then you'll be hard pushed to find better accommodation at this price - highly recommended!
