Hardly any time for ciao still...work and personal life issues prevail :p But I found time to post a new review and will now read a little of what I missed! OMG.. I was gone for a while and everybody turned orange! :o -need to change that horrid pic!-
The abbey at Mont Saint-Michel has been one of my dream-destinations to visit since, well, literary ages! This is how the story of my addiction started: Back in 1996 I have got a little pocket calendar with a beautiful cathedral on the front, I have fallen in love with it the moment I laid my eyes on it for the first time! However, the photo bore no description and even if I really did try, I was never able to find out what and where the place was....imagine my frustration as I'm a keen traveler and photographer! I've kept the little picture and every now and then it tortured my mind again. However, I have to say back then I had a strong suspection that it would be someplace in France as you can't iss the resemblance of French architecture. The redemption came in 2006 when my girlfriend told me we were going on holiday to French Normandy and that Mt. St.-Michel would be one of our destinations and she showed me pictures from her previous
trip to that place. I almost had a heart-attack when I saw I was going to lay my feet on the dreamt ground!
Ok, let me be a little more factual now.
Location and accessibility Le Mont Saint Michel is situated in Normandy, France, in the bay of St. Malo. We went there from Granville by car, which is probably the best as you can park right by the coast. Don't forget to check the high tide information though, because as the tide comes in, the only land access goes under water! I was surprised to find out that in that part of French seaside the difference of low and high tide could easily be even more than 10m!
Walking up the hill to the abbey is quite a walk, so make sure you wear good shoes and have a lot of water with you, especially in summer. The narrow and crooked lanes tend to get really busy and crowded packed by people on their way up or down, checking the souvenire shops, taking pictures or just enjoying the sights. I have seen litle children, people on wheelchair and disabled people to crawl up so it probably is accessible to everyone eventually, but I got bit short of breath on the way.
Fees You only pay for parking (I don't remember anymore how much that was) and entering the abbey where we paid 8 euro/person, which I considered pretty fair price. Bear in mind that this was 2 years ago.
Little bit of history The abbey has been founded somewhere in the 8th century AD when the Bishop of Avranches built a small church dedicated to Archangel Michael. The very first building underwent quite many re-builds during following centuries and finally during the Hundred Year's war of England and France the little town on the hill has become a bit of a fortress and in the early 15th century the great gothic cathedral as we know it nowadays was built. A dark era in its history came during the times of the Great French revolution in the end of the 18th century when the abbey served as a prison to enemies of the revolution. Nowaydays Le Mont Saint-Michel has been under UNESCO's protection as a part of the world heritage. Inside the abbey you can see an exposition about its history and how it was built and reconstructed during the centuries.
The Abbey The abbey is a masterpiece of gothic architecture and if I believe that the greatest gothic gem of central Europe lies in Prague, Saint-Michel would be the one of the western coast! As I have come to find later, there are many websites and books dedicated to Mont Saint-Michel as it is one of the most favoutire photographers' target and believe me it looks beautiful in any light.
Life above the sea The little town beneath the abbey is marvellous to wander through even if most paths, strais and streets are steep and narrow, the atmosphere is hard to describe. The place swallowed me and I wouldn't find it difficult to stay around for more than a couple of days! It's beautiful, small old white-brick houses with wooden roofs stuck to the hill as if scared the wind could blow them off and into the sea. Small often battered-looking low walls surrounded by bushes growing over and trees providing a little bit of shadow to sit in so that you can watch the sea, feel the presence of timeless history locked in the ground around you and savour being a part of it for a while.
Surroundings The scenery is wonderful, sand lines the shore forming small bays and lagoons the seagulls paddle in.
Accomodation and tourist attractions There are a few hotels behind the town walls, however the rates are quite high (close to 100 euro per person and night) and it wasn't even my intention to stay overnight even if I would have loved to. If you plan to spend a night of more at Mont Saint-Michel, don't forget you have to park your car in a tide-less area. Eating out is very expensive as well, prices of bottle of water and sandwich like double than usual.
There's a plenty of souvenirs to buy, starting with anything with the marine themes like clothing, house decorations or pottery, through silver and steel jewelry, accessories, keychains and toys to typical French food and medieval weapons' models.
Conclusion I only had a chance to visit in high summer (July), so the place was crammed with tourists and it was more than damn hot, but I have more than enjoyed the trip to Mont Saint-Michel and I would more than recommend it to everyone who find themselves in France and love history and architecture, it would be a shame to miss this amazingly beautiful place!

We visited Mont-St-Michel a couple of weeks ago - think we got lucky as it wasn't too busy but we did get there fairly early and it was filling up as we left. One of the places on the 'must see' list!
