...Today I have had occasion to find out the cost of a return ticket from Newton Abbot in Devon to Bristol Temple Meads. Why? You ask! Boyfriend problems. A crisis apparently! Anyway I looked at the map of Bristol and my eyes clung sadly to it's hideous gyratory system and I thought...I'll get the train. Terrified that it would be exorbitant I rang the enquiries number and I was told that it would cost a marvellous £21.10, roughly £10.00 and hundreds of hassle cheaper than taking my delightful Ka there and back. So, any journeys you are going on just check the cost of the train, you might be pleasantly surprised....

...'s grave in the graveyard of St Chad's Church. To really experience the Dickensian atmosphere you must visit Wyle Cop. Dickens not only stayed here, he also wrote about it. As he looked out of his window at The Lion Hotel - you can still stay here - he described the scene as follows; "looking all downhill and slantwise at the crookedest black and white houses, all of many shapes except straight shapes."
Shrewsbury is full of black and white timber buildings and intriguing haunted alleys with curious names such as Grope Lane and Butcher Row. Visiting these winding streets and narrow alleys you will find one of the best collections of independent shops in the country. Wyle Cop alone boasts of 90 different shops, cafes, hotels and pubs, the majority of which are independently owned. Tanners Wine Merchants an award winning wine merchants...

...operating from the edge of the town are truly superb and good value - but be warned - thy can be very very very busy in the run up to christmas.
If you are planning a visit to shrewsbury to do some christmas shoping in the next two months or so - then try late nights on Wednesdays from November 15th - and experience the fantastic christmas illuminations - they make shopping a great experience.
Well served by rail links and bus services (at fairly ok intervals) - you should not find it too difficult to get here - but the public transport lacks greatly when it comes to late evening getaways fom Shrewsbury - but why not prolong your day ttrip and stay overnight at on of the many Top Class hotels in the town (The Lion , Prince Rupert , Lord Hill , Albrighton Hall ) or even a stop at one of many many B&B 's available on the edge of the Town.
