Advantages: Lovely old building with excellent rooms Disadvantages: possibly location is being used as a base for Shrewsbury
made to order and is delicious. The menu for the evening meal looked impressive - although we ate in Shrewsbury so cannot really comment.
The bar is pretty good for a hotel, but on a wet autumn evening it was not enough to keep us there all evening. The only downside for us was the location - too far out of the city to walk, so got a taxi, and had a long wait for a taxi back. The quite location however will probably be perfect for others.
The other point of interest for the stay - was a fire in the middle of the night, so we were all out in the carpark at 3.00am! It was well organised however with free hot drinks and snacks provided, and we were soon back in our rooms. No lasting damage was done.
I got an excellent price deal due to a business relationship, it normally costs around £110-£125 for a double room b&b.

's grave in the graveyard of St Chad's Church. To really experience the Dickensian atmosphere you must visit Wyle Cop. Dickens not only stayed here, he also wrote about it. As he looked out of his window at The Lion Hotel - you can still stay here - he described the scene as follows; "looking all downhill and slantwise at the crookedest black and white houses, all of many shapes except straight shapes."
Shrewsbury is full of black and white timber buildings and intriguing haunted alleys with curious names such as Grope Lane and Butcher Row. Visiting these winding streets and narrow alleys you will find one of the best collections of independent shops in the country. Wyle Cop alone boasts of 90 different shops, cafes, hotels and pubs, the majority of which are independently owned. Tanners Wine Merchants an award winning wine merchants ...
Advantages: £ star hotel near to town centre Disadvantages: Oldy worldy, small car park
Forty years ago as a student at a catering college, I went to work along with several other friends as a waitress at a ball at a prestigious hotel in Shrewsbury. For this I earned the princely sum of £1.00 and a meal! Extortion comes to mind!
Things have moved on and last week I went to the same hotel, now under new management and this time I was waited on, and enjoyed the experience much better.
The Lion hotel is reported as being a 16th century coaching inn, situated at the top of Wyle Cop, a hill leading into the town, just after crossing the English Bridge and it is a Grade I listed building. It is a great situation for exploring the lovely streets with beautiful black and white houses and shops. Shrewsbury is the county town of Shropshire in the West Midlands and is a historic market town.
