Situated on Lower Gardiner Street, Abbott Lodge is the ideal base from which to launch a short, cheap break in Dublin.
Officially rated as a two-star affair, AbbottLodge boasts many facilities one would expect from a more expensive establishment within the confines of a converted "Georgian" building.
My wife and I have just returned from a very short break in Dublin, and we chose Abbott Lodge due to its close proximity to the Central Bus Station and relative adjacency to the other sights in Dublin. Because the Bus Station (or Busaras as it is known locally) is nearby, travellers can catch the Airport Express from Dublin International to within one block of the hotel for the princely sum of 5 euros each or to O'Connell Street (one of Dublin's main streets on the North bank) for 1.75 euros each.
Another important consideration in the choice of hotel was that Abbott Lodge ran a 24 hour reception. Something none of the other numerous hotels in Gardiner Street did.
As for the hotel itself, I would suggest that guests try to get a room to the rear of the building; the hotel faces onto a somewhat busy road and I think the sound may be audible within the rooms. The views from the building are nothing special so you won't lose anything by going at the back.
The rooms are perfectly adequate, and as with most budget accommodation is nothing out of the ordinary but our room was very clean with clean bed linen and a full range of clean white towels. The room was also equipped with a colour TV (with a selection of satellite channels), a kettle and some tea and coffee. Fortunately there was also a spare blanket for those people who feel cold as soon as the temperature drops below 20 degrees C (like my wife!) and, somewhat bizarrely, a telephone book (there was no telephone in our room).
Another oddity of the room was that we had a strange kind of entrance lobby with wardrobe outside the main room, I suppose in order to compensate for the slightly narrow room.
At the rear of the room was the bathroom where we found our only problem with the hotel. And in reality it was a minor thing which I expect will be resolved by the time we visit again. Above the shower cubicle on the ceiling was a quantity of black mould as found in peoples bathrooms across the world - we just didn't expect to find it in a hotel bathroom! The shower itself was a quality power job which certainly warmed the room up; it's tiled floor and walls made it quite cold in the morning!
We found the hotel staff to be very helpful and friendly, both the woman who was working on reception when we checked in, the kitchen staff at breakfast and the man working reception when we checked out.
The breakfast was a superb affair considering the cost of the room (51 euros!) with unlimited cereal, juice and coffee, followed by a sizeable cooked breakfast consisting of sausages, eggs, beans, bacon and toast. Especially as we had paid 16 euros for a similar breakfast on O'Connell Street the day before!
I usually make some of my judgements regarding establishments by the apparent popularity with other people; Abbott Lodge seemed to be almost full and all of the other guests appeared to be happy, relaxed and enjoying themselves. As my wife and I felt the same way, I can only say that the hotel really was good!
We have already determined to visit Dublin again, and when we do Abbott Lodge will again be our accommodation of choice.
Pros: [1] Very cheap [2] Very friendly [3] Excellent breakfast [4] Comfortable bed [5] Good shower
Cons: [1] Mould in the bathroom [2] ummm....nothing else!
