LOCATION
Aberafon campsite is situated in North Wales on the Llyn Peninsula, it is approximately 10 miles south of Caernarfon and 9 miles north of Pwllheli in a little village called Gyrn Goch on the A499. It sits at the foot of the mountain Gyrn Goch and has the beautiful sea view to the front. It is also very close to all north Wales attractions, including Conwy Castle, Caernarfon Castle and Harlech Castle to name but a few.
Campsite Description
There is one cottage to rent, the rest of the site is dedicated to tents, touring caravans or motorhomes. They also have seasonal pitches for people who choose to leave their touring caravans there all year round and also storage for people who need somewhere to keep their caravans until they choose to take them out.
The drive up to the site is a nightmare to be blunt, the drive is very narrow with very little if any room for cars to pass, definitely no room for caravans or motorhomes to pass. It is also very steep with quite tight corners. The shower block is just as you go through the entrance. There is a fabulous natural water stream that runs from the mountains to the sea straight through the site, which you follow as you drive to reception.
Reception is a small room part of the main house, it incorperates a small shop selling basics, pop, ice lollies, milk bread etc., it is very friendly and welcoming.
The site itself is set in green areas with toilets and or showers at various points throughout the site. Some of the pitches are either over looking or actually next to the beach. All pitches are of a decent size, room for an awning and car plus room to play games or BBQ. You don't feel claustrophobic as you do with a lot of campsites. They have a play area with slides, swings, monkey bars etc, this over looks the beach. There are also goats on the site which are next to the play area which are really friendly and love attention and an extra bit of food....don't they always!
There are also lots of wild animals that like to come and be nosy, lots of hedgehogs and rabbits were roaming around which is brilliant for children! The children loved playing in the natural stream that runs through the site and there are about 4 pitches directly next to the stream.
The site has electric hook ups but also non electric if you prefer, lots of taps and water points so getting water is no problem.
What the site allows
The site is very laid back, perfect for families with children and also couples. You cab BBQ at your pitch or if you prefer on the beach! There is room for ball games and for children to ride bikes and fly kites. Dogs are allowed on site as long as you clean up after them. Gazebos are also permitted. The games room shuts at around 11pm, as it is a family site but BBQ's can go on much later.
Campsite Amenities
The main toilet block is as you come in the main entrance, it consists of toilets, showers and wash basins. Although basic it is clean and well looked after. Other toilets and showers are dotted around the site, again basic but well looked after. There is a games room, an old barn consisting or a pool table, a few sweetie machines and a TV with free view, this closes at around 10.30 to 11.00 pm every night. Next door to this is the laundrette, again basic but it has everything you need to wash and dry your clothes etc. At most toilet blocks there is also a washing up station for pots and pans.
Beach
The site has it's own private beach with slip way to launch boats, jet skies etc. The beach is quite rocky, though depending on the time of year and tide has lots of sandy patches too. The great thing though is that the owners allow and actually encourage fires on the beach and sell bags of sticks for a very low price. The sunsets are amazing and when you are all crowded around a campfire it's just very relaxing and brilliant for family time.
There are also some fabulous coastal walks along the beach.
Nearby
There are so many things to do in this area, gorgeous pubs, parks and beaches. Also castles museums, walks.
Harlech Castle aproximatley 10 miles away, Carenarfon Castle approximatley 20 miles away. There is a lovely sand y beach just a few minutes drive away, with a cafe, shops pub etc. There is a also a a little harbour with pier, perfect for sea fishing and crabbing. Again just a few minutes drive away there's a lovely pub that does fabulous food a garage and also newasagents. To be honest there aren't many places you can walk to with ease especially with children.
Just down the road is a go kart track with bouncy castles etc, free to go in but pay as you use things.
My Opinion
Fantastic relaxing holiday perfect if you want to have time out and enjoy the children and family. Great family atmosphere and friendly owners. Not much on site but it would really spoil it if there was. Lots to do around the area with a little driving.
I would definatley go again and again....beautiful!
Last Important Point
The owners will tow your caravan from the site back to the road with their Landrover, in fact they prefer to do this! I would advise yanyone to let them, they know the road and the corners and also the gradient of the hill is very steep! You don't want to get stuck as one family did while we were there.....you can say goodbye to your clutch!!
