Abotel Renoir Montparnasse, Paris

We stayed at this hotel in October 2006 and only booked for one night.

We had requested two non-smoking rooms, both with city views. The first room, on the 4th floor, looked out onto a back street and was very small. The second room was also quite small, on the 6th floor and looked onto Rue de Montparnasse, but the smell of stale tobacco hit us as soon as we opened the door into the room.

The wallpaper in one room was torn and the whole decor seemed tired and in need of refurbishment in both rooms. The bathrooms were very small, with over bath showers, only one set of toiletries supplied which was not really enough for two people in each room.

The second room was also quite small, on the 6th floor and looked onto Rue de Montparnasse, but the smell of stale tobacco hit us as soon as we opened the door into the room.

The beds in both rooms were two singles pushed together and made up as a double. The bed linen was clean, but the smell of tobacco still lingered on the duvet.

The wallpaper in one room was torn and the whole decor seemed tired and in need of refurbishment in both rooms. The bathrooms were very small, with over bath showers, only one set of toiletries supplied which was not really enough for two people in each room.

In the room overlooking the street it was very noisy as there were many cafes around the area and these did not close until the early hours of the morning. It was a warm evening, but opening the double glazed windows was not an option because of the noise from outside. However, although the rooms were air conditioned this was also noisy, so we had to spend a rather uncomfortable night in a stuffy room.

Access to the rooms on the upper floors was via a very small lift, to hold only 4 people. In the morning this was called and it was occuped by the dirty linen dustbin so we had to walk down seven flights of stairs!

Breakfast was in the basement, a bright room, which looked as if it had been refurbished. The food was brought to our table and consisted of orange juice, (no choice offered), tea or coffee, one croissant each, bread roll, jam, yoghurt and a slice of pre packaged cheese.

The reception area was bright and again looked as if it had been refurbished. On the brochure and website pictures the hotel looked deceptively large due to the use of large expanses of mirrors on the walls in the public areas.

Entry to the hotel was via intercom entry when the Reception area was unmanned, but within seconds of our buzzing someone opened the door to us.

All the staff were very polite and helpful, the Reception staff spoke good English too and were able to help us with tourism queries.

The two rooms cost us less than one hundred pounds for one night, which was good value for a hotel situated in the heart of Paris. There are several metro stations within easy walking distance of the hotel, many good restaurants and bars within the immediate vicinity and it is in a good location for exploring Paris.

I would recommend it but would advise non smokers to complain if their room smells of stale tobacco as ours did. We didn't bother to ask to change as we were tired after a long journey and it didn't seem worth making a fuss when we were only there one night.
