The City By The (Other) Bay

Advantages: Closest beach to Mexico City, donde vivo ahora
Disadvantages: It rains a lot this time of year

...and head to the beach. Acapulco is the nearest beach to Mexico City, so off we went.

~~~ Getting There ~~~
Some people would fly to Acapulco. It takes 45 mins from here, and is quite a civilised way to travel. Not us. We took the Autopista del Sol (Highway to the Sun) which should take 4 - 5 hours, but of course took us longer (think 6.5 hours) because of the long-weekend traffic. Mexico doesn't really do trains, but ...
...~~~ A Regular Day In Acapulco ~~~
The bay and the beach are two of the main reasons people head to Acapulco, though I think it's a little more the former than the latter. I have been to many beautiful Mexican beaches, and Acapulco does not make the list for me. I did not go at the best time of year, perhaps, as the water quality was not brilliant - stretching out my legs while I floated I could tell I had a feet, but not count the ... more
Loco for Acapulco
Advantages: the weather, the people, the area, virtually everything in fact
Disadvantages: the beach sellers, the cockroaches, the long flight time from the UK, and a small earthquake.
...have not been before, but Acapulco is somewhere I would return to in a heartbeat. It has to be one of the best holidays I have had in a long time. Why? I hear you ask. We booked about 6 weeks before we went so not exactly last minute, but not ages in advance and paid around £750 each for all inclusive 4 star hotel for two weeks. All the hotels are arranged around the bay along a long road called La Costera, and many are actually on the beach. ...
...staff were great, you didnt even have to get out of your sunlounger to go to the bar, the waiters came down on to the beach and delivered your drinks to you dripping with ice. Well you need to keep cool in 47C heat. Before this turns into a review on the hotel, let me mention the resort of Acapulco. There is tons to do beside sitting soaking up the sun, if you are that way inclined. We fit in a day diving, (cost about £80.00 each), a day on a boat ...
Good Enough For A Short Sharp Summer Stay
Advantages: Great location, kitchenette, 4 swimming pools, free safety deposit box, unbeatable price
Disadvantages: Not too many facilities, a basic hotel really, slow lifts
I sometimes think that if you believed Trip Advisor you would never stay in any hotel, anywhere in the world. This hotel did not have good reviews, but we stayed there anyway, and it was, as they say, Not Too Bad. This week was Mexican Independence Day (celebrated on 16th Sept...incidentally the day the war of independence commenced, not the day it ended) and so we had a long weekend - 5 days for me, since I never work Fridays anyway. We decided to go to Acapulco for 3 nights, and through a combination of restricted budget and late booking, ended up staying here. ~~~ Arrival ~~~ We took a should-be-5-hour-but-holiday-traffic-turned-it-int o-6½-hours bus trip from Mexico City and arrived into Acapulco at about 4pm. There are several different bus terminals depending on your company, but they are all similar. A taxi from ...
One of Mexico's Hidden Jewels
Advantages: Quite, beautiful and cheap !
Disadvantages: A bit difficult to get to for the unseasoned traveller
Puerto Escondido. I would say that this destination is one of my favourites. Puerto Escondido (meaning ‘hidden port’ in Spanish) is a small town on the Pacific coast of Southern Mexico. It has become popular with surfers due to its most excellent surf (dude!), but is as yet little known, and therefor remains ‘hidden’. You can travel by bus from either Oaxaca (12hrs), Acapulco (3 or 4hrs) or Mexico City (loads of hrs!) all have airports, and you can occasionally get really cheap flights (I did!). Upon arrival (most likely by bus) you will disembark at the top of the hill a few kilometres from the beach area.. You can take a taxi (for about 20 pesos) down to the beach area, where there’s a stretch of Hotels, bars and restaurants. My girlfriend and I stayed in a place called Hotel Rockaway at the end ...
The New Adventures of Old Vallarta
Advantages: Lovely promenade and old town, great weather
Disadvantages: Not many restaurants in the hotel zone
Choosing to spend Semana Santa, the week before Easter, in Vallarta was not difficult. I've been to Acapulco, and I spent a month near Cancún when I first arrived in Mexico, so Vallarta was the obvious choice for my next beach trip. Located about 90 minutes by air from Mexico City, Vallarta is served by dozens of flights from the capital every day. We flew early Sunday morning and returned the following Sunday afternoon, getting just over a week in the resort. Vallarta airport is surprisingly nice. It is certainly better than the tiny thing in Veracruz, but then it is an international airport, with tons of flights to the USA and Canada as well as domestically within Mexico. We arrived at the start of a busy holiday week, but it was less than 30 minutes from exiting the plane to getting into a taxi, as baggage reclaim was quick. When ...
