Adelaide, Australia - Working Holiday

Advantages: Sights, Activities, Work
Disadvantages: Visa process

Will be heading out to Adelaide later this year with the girlfriend for a working holiday, and thought a review of what we have found out so far and what I already know of the place might be useful for others thinking about doing the same. I lived in Adelaide till I was about 10 and have been back there a number of times since (from the UK), and have to say I have never been short of things to do there! Adelaide (like many places in Australia) is ...
...city in places like the Adelaide Hills and Vineyards, however there are some very good water parks in the city for younger people (and adults who think they are still younger people like myself!). The night life is also good in Adelaide with a range of excellent clubs and bars in the centre and also some interesting ones just outside (easy to get there by taxi). In place of the usual end of night kebab or curry that we have here, the Australian ...

Backpack Oz (Hostel) - Adelaide

Advantages: Cheap Hostel, close to all attractions, friendly staff
Disadvantages: You wont want to leave!

...may be thinking, I'll visit Adelaide but only as a stop over between Perth & Sydney. I decided to take a year out of my life - 2002-2003 - and go backpacking around Australia. I'd been in Perth for about 3 months (staying with family) and I decided that my next main point of call was going to be Sydney. So, I took the Indian Pacific Train from Perth to Adelaide (took over 24 hours on the train but it was well worth it, saw the real outback!). I was ...
...staying almost 7 weeks! Adelaide itself I think was a beautiful City. The beaches were gorgeous and easily accesible by the trams - the shops are good to visit and there's even a chocolate factory which is well worth a visit even if you're not a great lover of chocolate. But the thing that really made me want to stay was Backpack Oz. It was not like any other Hostel I had ever stayed in. All the rooms were VERY clean and tidy and ranged from a room ...

Diamond review  Livin' It Up in Lovely Adelaide (The Long Story)

Advantages: Fantastic Wines, Excellent Pubs, Cultural Atmosphere, Fab Public Transport
Disadvantages: none

... I first came to Adelaide in 2002 at which point I was working on a master of education degree at the University of South Australia. It was a big change from what I was used to as I had been living in small town America. The obvious differences are the new location, new country, new situation and environment. The less obvious difference is the language. Yes we both speak English; no ...
...At first I came to Adelaide as a tourist, and I fell in love with the city and its people. Now I call Adelaide home and I can't imagine being anywhere else and being this happy. So why is Adelaide so great? I hope to give at least a few ideas here so sit back relax and enjoy the sights and sounds of Adelaide, South Australia. *********************************************************************** Some quick facts about Australia and Adelaide: ...

Loved South Australia, not so keen on Adelaide

Advantages: Close to other attractions
Disadvantages: Known as 'City of churches' - what does that tell you!

...my husband has relatives in Adelaide so that was our base most of time. I found the city itself a bit boring compared to say Sydney, Melbourne or anywhere in Queensland. I found it very confusing to get around, and didn't discover a lively area at all. However, for me the advantages of Adelaide were the surrounding areas. The Barossa Valley, an hour or so away, is just beautiful, and I was not the designated driver that day so got to fully appreciate ...
...we went to (Penfolds and Yalumba). Kangaroo Island is a couple of hours and a short ferry trip, and is fantastic for wildlife, with kangaroos and wallabies just wandering around, penguin, seal and sea lion colonies, and a wildlife sanctuary run by a hilarious 'crocodile hunter' type guy called Paul. There you get to cuddle koalas, possums, hand feed baby kangaroos, etc etc. If you plan to go to Kangaroo Island in their high season around Christmas, ...

MY HEARTS TRUE HOME...revisited

Advantages: Too many to list here...
Disadvantages: Too far away from the UK...

...of William IV. Like Melbourne, Adelaide was NOT established as a penal colony, but was founded by free citizens mainly from Britain. Captain John Hindmarsh led the first settlers and they landed from their ship the HMS Buffalo in Holdfast Bay (now known as the City of Holdfast and incorporating Glenelg, which is Adelaide’s main beach area) in December 1826. The surveyor-general, Colonel William Light, with these first settlers, chose the site ...
...a basic guide to Adelaide. Adelaide is the capital city of the state of South Australia. Looking at a map, it's right down at the bottom of the country, not quite in the middle. To the West of the City is the Gulf of St. Vincent, to the East are the Mount Lofty Ranges (known to Adelaidians as the Adelaide Hills), to the North is the Barossa Valley and to the South is the Fleurieu Peninsula and McLaren Vale. Its population is around 1.5 million, which ...
