Corfu is a wonderful little island can be found just off the West coast of Greece.
The hot, dry summers and the winter rainfall than is more than any of the other islandsmakes Corfu a lot greener than some of the other greek islands - mainly due to the incredible amounts of olive trees that grow on the island.Corfu is the second largest of the Ionian Islands and lies off the coast of Albania.
The capital of Corfu is Corfu Town (Kérkyra in Greek) and it is to Kérkyra airport that we fly when we holidday on this island.
Holidays on Corfu can vary depending on the area of the island you choose to stay in. On the Eastern side of the island, looking out to Albania, the land slopes gently to the turquoise sea and there are long shingly beaches and bays. But the western side is much more dramatic, steep and rocky with deep coves and sandy beaches. The north coast of Corfu is the most heavily occupied by tourists during the summer months and is the place to go for beach and pub holidays!!
We stay on the north east of the island in the little village of Kalami, which is about 30 k (45 minutes) from the airport in Kérkyra .
In my opinion Kalami is one of the most beautiful spots spots on Corfu Island is well known as the place that writers Gerald and Lawrence Durrell lived. It is a tiny village, surrounded by olive groves and flowers and offers a traditional atmosphere to visitors. Time has stop in Kalami and everything reminds as it was in the old traditional villages. The word in Greek for ’hospitality’ is 'filoxenia' – literally friendship to strangers - and you will certainly meet a lot of 'filoxenia' in Kalami.
Our Accomodation
For this review I am describing the holiday spent in the Adonis Asontis apartments. These apartments are in the heart of Kalami within absolutly incredible views overlooking the bay and the Ionian Sea.
The Apartments dominate the slope down to the village from the road above, known locally as 'The Pink Palace' due to the pink buildings it snuggles in amongst the olive groves. The very nature of the apartments do not make them suitable for people with mobility problems but it also makes for an incredibly beautiful location. The aptments are all built on various levels with a lift to the higher levels - in fact other visitors to Kalami use the hotel as an easy way to get to the road above the village for buses etc Kalami means reed and the village was given the name because of the reeds that growon the beach in front of the little houses that are dotted there. Kalami's streets are so narrow that large coaches cannot get down to it - so we were met by a mini bus which took us to the lift area. the lift area .
Our first impression of the apatrment was very favourable, we were on the 6th floor and had a stunning view over the bay from our balcony. The apartment was basic but very clean and comfortable. We had 3 beds, a wardrobe, a dressing table, a table and chairs and there was small kitchen area with a ( rather noisy!!) fridge, 2-ring cooker and kettle, also bathroom and a balcony with a patio table and chair set.
On the down side there is no air-conditioning so I would recommend hiring a fan as soon as you arrive because the room does gets very hot and stuffy if you visit in the hottest months.
Thomson's class these apartments as 2*, buty in my opinion this does not do justise to the apartments.
Throughout our two weeks stay we couldn't fault the facilitius, staff or the cleanliness of the apartment and surrounding area, we had excellent maid service 6 days a week and the view from the balcony were just stunning.
The two pools and bars at the complex were available to be used by anybody not just residents and all were very plasant, comfortable and clean. Some of the food there was a little 'English' but when using the pool we would often buy our lunch there and opt for the Greek alternatives - we got lovely Greek Salads, pitta , taramassalta and hummous that we washed down with local Retsina and it was all very reasonably priced. The Bella Vista pool bar at the top of the building is a sun trap with amazing views of the bay and Albania. The pool bar serves drinks and snacks from 10.00 am until 5.30 pm. Cocktails and dreams” is the name of the lower bar at Adonis Asonitis - next to the lower pool.
It opens at 8.30 am and is an ideal spot to go and get your breakfast - both Contintal and full English. In the evening there are always “Chef’s Specials”, cooked fresh each day, these include traditional Corfiot dishes such as Stifado and Lemon Lamb .
I felt that everyone at the apartments did all they could to appeal to all types of guests - if you wanted egg and chips, they were available but you could also eat typical Greek food, if you wanted to keep to yourself that was fine but it was very easy to join in with other guests..
There was evening entertainment if you wanted to join in with Greek dancing etc, English films were shown if the kids were getting a little too hot in the afternoons. Overall though I would say that this is a small quiet resort which is perfect for relaxing
Kalami
Kalami is a village unspoilt by tourism, it contains three tavernas, three mini markets, 3 bars, 3 travel offices and 2 tourist shops where you can arrange car hire, boat hire, excursions etc and borrow a wide selection of books.
This certainly isn't the destination for people looking for a bustling night life, it is for people who want to relax on the beach, wander through the olive groves, snorkle or swim in the crystal clear water, eat some incredible food, meet the friendly locals, fish, sail or take out a speed boat and visit some wonderful little coves. It has a shingle beach with plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas to hire.
The beach is not sandy on this side of the island but shingle. There are however sunbeds and umbrerllas available on the beach for only a few euros a day. There are also showers, toilets and changing areas available on or close to the beach. Kalami Beach is a very safe beach and has a clear, clean sea.
There are three tavernas, the Taverna Kalami Beach , sitting on the shingly beach, it is owned by the Georgotzis family - it was once their small house on the beach, that was used before the war for housing the Albania workers who came to gather the olives. In the 80's it was turned into the taverna it is today.
Another taverna that has been converted from afamily home on the beach is the wonderful Thomas's Place. There are tables on the beach and under vine vovered verandas and the greek and Cypriot food that is served there is incredible. My favourite being the courgette and aubergine fritters - absolutly delicious.
The third taverna was - The White House Taverna. We used this a lot for breakfast and evening meals and got to know the staff really well. The fish there was incredible and caught fresh daily with their own fishing boat.
In Conclusion
Kalami is a simply wonderful little unspoilt village, well worth a visit. The Adonis & Asonitis Apartments make for a great value holiday and an ideal base to enjoy the wonderful surroundings from.
