...The Florence Mine is an old iron mine now used as a museum. The guided tours take 1 to 2 hours and covers the industrial an geological history of the mine. The paths are steep and stony, and the iron ore makes an excellent deep red dye which penerates the overalls provided. The guides are all employees of the mine and provide a good, down to earth trip without the rehearsed spiel of professional tour guides.
The mine is close to Whitehaven and Gosforth and well sign posted from the main road. It is not recommended for anyone who doesn't like confined spaces or who is not easily mobile....

...After this city was the setting for "Hannibal", I thought I'd write and tell you all that it is even more beautiful than it is portrayed in the film.
I went last September, for a week. As Florence (or Firenze as it is called in Italy) has no airport, we flew, from Manchester, to the Galileo Gallilee airport in Pisa. The flight was as comfortable as you would expect with British Midland and took around 2 hours.
The first thing I was greeted with when I got off the plane was a life size poster of Pavarotti! Still, Customs were O.K. and we caught a bus to Florence right outside the airport. This took around an hour and cost the equivalent of 4 quid. So the city itself is quite accessible.
The first place I wanted to go was the Ufizzi gallery. Unfortunately, when we got there, the queue was an estimated two hours long! We beat...

...and dads room was large in comparison. I guess you have to be lucky.
I would recommend it for location. The city is lovely and the markets are great make sure you barter. Most of them do deals. The food in Florence is great there are restaurants on every corner. For a cheaper meal stick to back alleys as restaurants in the many Piazas can be expensive.
I can recommend the ice-cream you can get a small cone for 2EUR which I thought was big enough or you can get a 'monster' cone with 4 scoops for about 12EUR....
