I flew aboard Aeroflot in August 2000 from London (Heathrow) to Delhi via Moscow, primarily because of their excellent flight times and their highly attractive airfare (at least £100 less than my next best quote).
The service from London to Moscow was equal in standard to that of Western airlines: the aircraft was comparatively modern (Airbus A310); the interior was clean and tidy; the food was satisfactory; and the attendants were cheerfully helpful.
The service from Moscow to Delhi was similarly good, albeit aboard an old, Soviet-manufactured aircraft (Ilyushin 96).
In contrast, the return leg (Delhi to Moscow), was operated by the modern Boeing 777-200, the interior of which was unexpectedly tatty. (I suspect that the firm from which the aircraft was leased will not be happy about the state of the interior.)
Everything considered, Aeroflot was an inexpensive option, and the service was, in general, adequately reliable. Nevertheless, for those who are afraid – for whatever reason – of older, Soviet-built aircraft, perhaps consider another carrier, at least on non-European services to and from Moscow.
James.
P.S. The Irish bar in the international terminal serves good – but relatively expensive – Russian beer and vodka. Deliciously tempting!
Well, IL could be less attractive in terms of design of interior and level of noise but I would not claim that it is less safe than Boeing or Airbus, in fact it is better. Just a point to consider!
