I flew Aeroflot last week from London to Shanghai, via Moscow.
Although this was a 5-day business trip, my colleague and I were booked on Aeroflot Economy for the sake of saving £300 per ticket.
We weren't particularly pleased to learn that our trip to Shanghai would be 19 hours long (when we could have flown direct and arrived in 13 hours) but we tried really hard to stay positive and open-minded. 90% of people cringed when we mentioned Aeroflot, but a few said that they had greatly improved in the last couple of years.
So we were determined to take it easy.
God - what a disappointment...

Our outbound journey consisted of a 4-hour flight from Heathrow to Sheremetyevo, then 8-9 hours to Shanghai after a 1-hour stop-over in Moscow.
The return leg was Shanghai-Moscow (10 hours), stop-over in Moscow (3 hours) and then back to London (3 hour flight).

The 2 really bad points about Aeroflot are:

* Service & Staff attitude: although things were done efficiently, the service was unpleasant and unfriendly. We arrived at Heathrow T2, there was no queue at check-in, and the girls behind the counters literally looked away when we arrived, as if they had not seen us!! We stood there for a minute waiting for one of them to let us know we could come forward, and finally one of them looked at us and checked us in with a sigh.
The service was worse on the plane - the flight attendants were terribly unpleasant, sometimes unprofessional - one cabin crew member shouted at this guy for standing up and making his way to the toilet, when the drinks trolley was on the way - this is simply NOT the way to ask your customer to return to his seat and wait for a few minutes for the service to finish. They never asked "would you like a drink?" - they just looked at you and lifted their chin. I realise that they may have found it hard to communicate as their English was very poor, but on flights to London and Shanghai, do they really expect the Chinese and English passengers to be fluent in Russian?? At least they could try to smile to their customers - they all looked like they were miserable and unhappy to be serving us (except when we landed and walked out of the aircraft).
They were not doing much to make our flight more enjoyable either. No one walked around the cabin outside of meal times - during our 10-hour flight from Shanghai to Moscow, we were offered water /drinks only 3 times: 1 drink before each meal (lunch & dinner), and also before take-off, after sitting on the plane for 1 hour without moving (they only bothered to let us know there was a "10 minute" delay after we'd been waiting & wondering for over 1 hour, and people were starting to get restless in the hot & humid Shanghai atmosphere - so we did get some water! still no smile from the cabin crew though!)
Finally, their attitude when performing the safety demonstration was appalling - they simply looked like they couldn’t be bothered to point at the exits, or show us what to do in case of emergency. Most people don't pay any attention to the safety demonstrations, but the Aeroflot cabin crew really make these 5 important minutes the most boring thing on the flight (there was not even a safety demo on the Shanghai to Moscow flight I think).

* Safety and Comfort: having always flown Airbuses & Boeings, I was unsure about the IL-96's we flew. I was pleasantly surprised when we boarded the aircraft in London: roomy seats that recline a long way, good leg-room, and little flaps on the side to stop your head rolling if you fall asleep. This was good. Until the plane started to move - it was creaking very, very badly and we were very scared. We kept telling ourselves that they would never fly an unsafe plane, but god, were we scared. We landed in Moscow OK.
The Chinese part of our journey was the worse: both IL-96's between Moscow and Shanghai were slightly different from the first one: no head-flaps, no legroom, and terribly uncomfortable, noisy and creaky as if they seriously needed some repairs. They felt very unsafe, and this is the worst feeling on a long flight.
Comfort is definitely a point where Aeroflot score badly: it is unthinkable, nowadays, that an old aircraft with no screen should still be in use on long haul. And yet both flights between Moscow and Shanghai were. I'm not asking for an individual TV screen with a games console like Virgin planes have, a simple screen would have been enough, maybe showing a film, or even the progress of the flight... Here, nothing. We did have a screen on the London to Moscow plane, but nothing on the Chinese part of the flight, which was the longest. We nearly died of boredom. I read 3 books during the 10 hour-flight from Shanghai to Moscow. Carrying a library in your hand-luggage is a necessity when flying Aeroflot. You'd get away with it as well considering the size of the bag they let people take as hand-luggage! They just don't care...

Oh and possibly the worst point for me - they lost our luggage. We arrived last night at Heathrow, only to get a message that our suitcases had not been loaded on the London-bound aircraft and were still in Moscow... After being awake for 22 hours I was ready to kill somebody, but the bloke at Lost Luggage was very helpful and promised me that the suitcases would fly the next day, arrive in the morning in London, and be sent to me by courier before 2 pm. At 3:30pm no sign of them. I called then and got the confirmation they'd be here before 7pm... Fingers crossed! The positive points about Aeroflot are:
  • The punctuality: not brilliant when we left Shanghai, but all other flights were on time.
  • Food was OK - not Air France standard but definitely better than, say, United airlines. We had smoked salmon on both English flights, and overall the meals were OK. They had a vegetarian option on flights between London & Moscow.
  • They are cheap
  • They are definitely trying to improve, at least on their Western flights. We returned to London on board a brand new Airbus A320, very comfortable, and it did look and feel very safe! The staff were clearly making efforts, and we had a very "customer friendly" flight, with an announcement to inform us of our route, another one to keep us updated during the flight, and a little "goodbye, we hope we enjoyed the flight and look forward to serving you again" after landing. Well, they won't be serving me again. My expectations weren't high, and I am not a fussy flyer, but the bad service and my missing luggage were just too much.

I would recommend Aeroflot only if you fly between Moscow and Europe, and you're on a budget. The standard to China, in my experience, is extremely poor. I don't think the saving of £300 compared to Virgin, Lufthansa or any other European carrier was worth the extra flying time, the tiredness, the bad service, the stress of thinking the plane is unsafe, and possibly the loss of my luggage.

Hi, good first review! Im also new to Ciao as of today. Aeroflot seems to have a bit of a mixed response, most people seem to enjoy flying their non Russian jets...

You poor thing! My Russian friend refuses to fly with them so that says it all really! Another friend had her luggage opened in Moscow and all the Xmas presents for her family stolen. Thanks for the warning!
