I decided to fly Aeroflot because it was much cheaper than the other airlines. London to Bangkok return for approximately £350 was a good bargain. The service, food and the plane on the London to Moscow route was as good as any other airline. The plane on the Moscow to Bangkok flight however was a Ilyushin. The thing about this type of plane is that there is only one huge passenger compartment in economy and no partition like in the Western planes, lacking cosiness and looking quite precarious too. I felt like I was going to fly on board of a Soviet hospital waiting room. There was no TV in fact and incredibly no air conditioning and after a while when the socks and the shoes of the other passengers came off the air stank all the way to Bangkok…. On top of that the cute hostess of the London-Moscow flights had been substituted by middle-aged unattractive women and tough looking guys (probably ex Red Army soldiers from the Afghanistan war) that didn't seem to like serving people. On the good side the seats were no smaller than other airlines I have flown with and I was lucky to have a seat with nobody in front of me so I could stretch the legs a bit. When it was time to eat I had a removal panel fixed on my seat and I looked like a little boy in school! The food was good, as much as airline food can be called good or food. Twelve hours on that plane seems much longer and once I landed in Bangkok and finally breathed smelly sock-free air, I didn't look forward to the next trip back but at least I knew that by travelling Aeroflot I had saved some money.
