After having bad experiences with booking hotels online before (see my review West End Studios, New York), I ensured I did my research before booking this time.
I searched many review sites on the internet and all sites gave the Affinia 50 in New York top marks. So I had no hesitations reserving a suite.
We were travelling to New York as a surprise trip for my brothers 30th Birthday, and on the advise of a review, I mailed prior to departure asking if they could ensure us a room with a view..This unfortunately was not attained, but we were offered another room if we wished to change. And a bottle of wine was sent up for us as a gesture. Greatly appreciated! We ended up staying put, as our original room had a better layout (and was bigger!)
The hotel itself is in a superb location (on 51st/Lexington), in a nice area (East Midtown) with a Subway Station one block up, and the majority of attractions within easy reach. The lobby area is very welcoming with a large water feature and the staff are only to eager to help all residents.
Our apartment "suite" was perfect for the five of us. We were situated on the 11th floor (Room 1103) on a corner plot, which didn't have the greatest views, unfortunately. Included was a stylish, spacious living/dining area with huge TV, study area and sofa bed; a well appointed, although slightly dated kitchen (with coffee machine, dishwasher, toaster); a stylish bathroom (towels changed daily) and a bedroom complete with another huge TV and the MOST comfortable beds ever *think, "Princess And The Pea"* (just what you need after spending your days roaming the streets!)
The hotel comes with it's own Fitness Suite on the 2nd floor; not that we used it..I considered walking countless miles each day to be all the exercise we needed!
Again, on the 2nd floor is a large, stylish communal Lounge area; with Plasma TV, comfy sofas, New York themed games/books and a complementary coffee/tea making area. And as a bonus every Monday-Thursday between 6pm-7pm there is a Cheese/Wine evening for residents..All complimentary and greatly appreciated!
Upon your return to the Affinia 50 after spending each day out exploring the city, you're greeted on the doorstep by the VERY (almost overly) polite doorman who utters a "Welcome home" to each resident. Gets a little tiresome after a while, but adds to the whole ambience of being in New York, I guess!
All in all this was a perfect base for our week in the Big Apple and I'd definitely stay here again. If there's a group of you going over I'd highly recommend the Affinia 50. We paid about £330 each for the week, and there were five of us; so that should give you a rough idea of costs. But take it from me it was worth every penny. To have the oppurtunity to chill out and relax after a hard days sight-seeing or spending, in a welcoming, friendly environment; within your own stylish hotel suite is a luxury in New York.
Take it from me..This place is WELL worth a stay!!
