Ai-Ais Hot Springs Resort, Fish River Canyon

Advantages: Space is too small!
Disadvantages: Far away! That's pretty much it!

...for example you've got very typical German architecture, and the streets are called things like 'Kaiser Wilhelm Strasse' - you'd never think you were in Africa. But then you go places like Etosha National Park, and when standing in what many believe to be THE national park in Southern Africa, you could be nowhere else. Moving south to my favorite place, and the most stunning scenary and emptiness you will ever see, you got places like Sossusvlei and the rest of the Namib desert. Miles and Miles of sand dunes reaching 300m high, almost barren of life save some amazing plants that can live over 3000 years, and specially adapted antelope, elephants and a few others. If it's hiking your after then, Fish River Canyon down towards the SAfrican boarder near Ai-Ais has got it all with thermal waters at bath-water temperature filling up a large bating pool... Advantages: GREAT LOCATION AT A GREAT PRICE FOR AN AI

...the doorstep) to the beach its great for kids. It has its own Diving school (Excellent), and with a pier that has underwater lights at night, the fish/coral are excellent. Last year we swam with a green turtle (friendly), and previously swam with wild dolphins at the hotel. The best coral is only a short walk away towards where the old Israeli/UN negotiations were held (building now abandoned). You will see lion fish, barracuda, frog fish, puffers, cornet fish to nemo himself!!! Would I recommend this hotel- YES. Weather - hot with breeze in the morning, lot less still pm - But even in July last year it was bearable. Been in January too and during day about 24 degrees C, but cool at night. Lots of trips - can go over to Jordan/Petra/Israel/Luxor/Cairo All recommend a visit! With regards to cost -its Cheap! Cheapest and best... Read review

...on the South Rim, which is more accessible. You can visit the North Rim as well, but to visit both involves a very long journey around, and it is closed due to snow in winter. It is possible to walk to the bottom of the canyon, but this involves camping overnight and booking well in advance. Whilst a great experience, I wouldn't recommend this on a first visit unless you are an experienced hiker. You can however make a day hike down the side of the upper canyon, at the base of which is a wide plain before you reach the much narrower lower canyon. This I would highly recommend to anyone. This is a year-round attraction, but the best time to visit is in early spring when there is still snow on the ground. It won't be unpleasantly hot, there will be fewer tourists, and you can feel the incredible increase in temperature as you descend a little way... Read review
