Ancient Culture in a modern city - updated
Review of Ankara (Turkey) by anjuschka

Advantages: Cosmopolitan and full of culture
Disadvantages: It is a modern city

...shops jostle for space and offer tempting wares. Be sure to haggle hard if you intend to buy anything here. Right up on the citadel hill, across a park, lies what I consider the main attraction of Ankara. The most important museum in the land, the 'Museum of Anatolian Civilizations' can be found here. It houses an outstanding archaeological collection of finds from Anatolia, from the Stone Age through to Classical Period. As an archaeologist active in that area I would return to Ankara time and time again just to see this museum, which incidentally won the award of "European Museum of the Year in 1998 or 99", I think. Another sight not to miss whilst in Ankara is the Anit Kabir, Atatürks Mausoleum. Build on a hill overlooking the city, set amongst immaculate parks and guarded by honour guards from all military forces, it houses the body... Read review

Dream Country
Review of General: Turkey by uzunsoy

Advantages: currency,history,nature
Disadvantages:

...Turkey is both muslim and secular European country. However, they are also keen on their tradition which is a mixture of cultures. Anatolia has become a host to very different cultures for ages. You can still smell that mysterious history seeing its ancient prooves. Bodrum,Marmaris,Antalya,Kapadokya are popular places except the beatiful city Istanbul. In my opinion, Hittites, Persians, Ancient Greeks, Romans, Seljuks, Ottomans and all of them an historical fantasy, Fantastic! If you are keen on history, you can find more than you want especially In the middle and Mediterranian region of Turkey.... Read review

The Wild East - excursions in Southeast Turkey
Review of Anatolia (Turkey) by From_The_Continent

Advantages: a place to rediscover forgotten cultures; beautiful landscape
Disadvantages: huge distances to cover

...You don't need to fly all the way to Central Asia, South America or Central Africa to discover untouched territory. Southeast Turkey bears a treasure of undiscovered culture and nature - little known even by most Turks, let alone western tourists. This is the land of the ancient Mesopotamia, the world's first real civilisation (that is if you don't believe in Atlantis), from 12 thousand years ago. Embedded between mountain ranges and the rivers of Euphrates and Tigris, this region has been the source of legends for generations. Let yourself be mystified. This part of Southeast Anatolia is part of the Kurdish territory, and has been barred from visits for decades due to severe security threats. But since late 1999, this part of Kurdistan is open to visitors again, and you may only have a few years to discover this region before... Read review
