Fair warning. I am about to rubbish my national airline. Avert your eyes if you are of a fragile disposition. Tales of flying on AC are not for the faint of heart!
I will start with the one positive thing about the airline, and it's positive enough enough to earn them one star, and to over-ride my general "wouldn't recommend" opinion as long as you are willing to suffer all the other disadvantages. Air Canada offers a daytime flight from Toronto to London, leaving at 9.am. and landing at 9p.m. It's great because you don't lose a night's sleep, and can go straight to bed when you arrive, and be ready for anything the next day. I only ever fly Air Canada to take advantage of this.
I really don't know where to start with the downside. Remember, this is coming from a Canadian, so take any comments I make in that context. Canadians on the whole are lovely. Very friendly, but very inefficient. Except that Air Canada staff seem to have forgotten the friendly bit, and just stick to the inefficient. I do not exaggerate when I say that the most surly service I have ever had on a plane has been with Air Canada - and that includes the low-costs. One example. I was
flying with my son, and his headphones didn't work. We alert a flight attendant who basically informs us there is nothing she can do about it. We ask for a new set of headphones, and she stomps off. Several minutes later, she returns and practically throws another set at us. They still won't work, so we conclude it was a technical fault to do with that seat. So tough, no movie (the plane was full). No apology, nothing.
OK, that's when you actually manage to get on the plane. A few more hellish encounters with Air Canada, this time on the ground. My son was flying alone to visit his grandmother. We arrived at Heathrow for an evening flight. They had substituted a much smaller plane for the one that should have operated the service, and were looking for volunteers to be bumped. Fair enough, it didn't matter to my son whether he got to Toronto late that evening or the next morning, so we took the offer of a voucher and a free night's hotel. We shouldn't have. We got to the airport the next day and checked in. My son went through security. It was only later that I learned that he had sat in the departure lounge for six hours. There was a fault with Air Canada's mainframe computer, which pilots also use to file flight plans, so all flights were grounded. He finally got to Canada about 24 hours after he was supposed to.
Transport yourself with me now to Toronto, to Terminal 2 at Lester B Pearson airport. We were there in August, and had some complicated comings and goings. My daughter was flying to California, as was my wife the following day. All I can say is thank God we had E-tickets. We arrived at terminal 2 for my daughter's flight to find absolute bedlam. Check in queues trailing everywhere. However the automatic check in machines were relatively free, so my daughter used one of those. Then she had to queue up to drop her bag on the belt. That was absolute chaos, queues forming everywhere (there was supposed to be just one), and nobody keeping order. So, bag eventually dropped, she joined the endless queue for US immigration (which you clear in Canada before boarding) and her mother and I ran as fast as we could out the door, knowing that we had to return to face all this the next day.
It was even worse the following morning, but my wife had only hand luggage, so that was a relief. Plus she was flying via Vancouver, so didn't have to deal with US immigration. So all checked in, we see a big sign for Vancouver at one end of the terminal, with a huge queue trailing from it. We go down, and instead of standing in the queue, I go to the front to see what it is for. It's the queue to drop your checked bags, but only for the Vancouver flights. The gates for Vancouver are at the OTHER END of the terminal. See what I mean about inefficiency?
Now this is the height of the summer season, and the Friday before a Bank Holiday weekend, so you would expect it to be busy. In the car on the way back I found out what was happening on the radio. Air Canada was in bankruptcy protection (from which they have since emerged) and the chose that particular weekend to lay off literally thousands of staff, mainly check in and other support people. On the radio, one chap said he had arrived at 6a.m. for a shuttle flight to Montreal for a business meeting. He was still in the check in queue at 11, when his meeting was starting in Montreal. By the way, on top of all this, the main computer developed the same fault it had previously, and was down for a good part of the day.
OK, I will spare you any more such horror stories, and finish off with the basics.
Air Canada flies a relatively modern fleet of mostly Airbuses. Onboard, the service is as I have described. I have yet to encounter personal TVs in economy, which are common now across the Atlantic. The food is in a word dreadful. Inedible chicken or fish usually, or a terrible omelette with some kind of potato for breakfast on the daytime eastbound flight.
Fares can be cheap. They had some good deals to fill seats when they were in trouble, but fares have been inching up. I have just checked Ebookers for a week in February, not exactly prime tourist time in Toronto, so you'd think Air Canada would be encouraging people to come. They are fourth pricewise, fully £50 more expensive than the cheapest option, though they are the cheapest direct service.
Their website is good, offering lots of information. Too bad their face-to-face service is so awful.
There is a general feeling in Canada that if they wanted to go bankrupt, they couldn't be going about it better.

Sadly, I have to completly disagree. I love Air Canada and think their standards and service are way above average. Never had problems with them. Desiree

Being a fellow Canadian I can relate to every thing you have said about AIR CHICKEN is what I call it. The service is terrible, and the price is far out of the reach of the common man. They are late, or they cancel flights. Believe me I have had plenty to groan about. Thanks for your honesty!

i am glad i read this reveiw as i was looking in to flying with them but did not know a lot about them i think i will skip as i tend to like my flights fun and comfortable with a bit of a smile from the stewards.
