Searching the Internet travel flight tickets sites for London to Chicago I came across Air India. These tickets were available on most sites and were 180 pounds for an adult ticket, 50 pounds for an infant. I was abit nervous to book not knowing much about airlines but the price decided the issue!! We flew in mid October.
Check-in was efficient and helpful, especially as my wife and I were travelling with a young child. On request, we were allocated a seat at the front of the economy section with space in front to place our very young daughter. The stewards/esses were dressed in traditional Indian dress - a different colour/style returning than going and were very aware of our needs carrying a young child. We were given a colourful soft ball at take off and another toy on landing to help distract her attention.
Food served onboard was good - a choice of Indian or English for lunch and a lovely Semosa before landing. They also served packets of spicy snacks rather than the normal peanuts. The flight was very smooth and took off and landed on time. Drinks were not served as regularly as on some airlines but it was nice to be able to relax without being asked whether you need something all the time. Anything required was provided quickly on request.
The plane was clean and only smelt of Curries while the food was served and the pilots seemed friendly and very capable - they wore Indian Government I.D. badges. The planes were Boeing 747's and fly the route from India to London to USA and return every day. The plane's interior was decorated (instead of the normal white) with flowers and designs (giving an Indian feel) that have been painted on - different design each way - even the sick bag was designed!!!!!
I see that they are still advertising these tickets on discount flight websites - in my experience this is a good airline and favourably comparable with much more expensive airlines.
I must, however, mention one negative. When we arrived back in Heathrow after the trip, we had to wait a very long time for our bags to be unloaded for collection at Baggage reclaim, but this is not the only airline who has given me this experience. Also, they weren't showing the normal blockbuster movie selection - cheaper, less popular entertainment - but overall, an enjoyable and good value flying experience.

glad to hear you had an enjoyable flight. I have flewn AI many times mainly beacuse of price, this August went to Chicago on AI as they were the cheapest. Though my experience was not as good as yours!!
You will find AI will have cheapest fares to Chicago as they have a HO there and in NY, and very large proprtion of Indians travelling from India to Chicago.
