In 1993, in a market monopolized by Air India and Indian Airways (two airlines backed-up by New Delhi government), arrive a totally privately-owned airline: Air Sahara. In an age of low-cost it was a surprise to see a new traditional airline, specially in a practically full market. Today, after more than ten years, Air Sahara has strengthened its market quota offering to its customers services quite perfect.
Air Sahara flies to 22 cities within India as well as to Colombo (Sri Lanka) and Khatmandu, Nepal. The fleet has an average age of 5 years and includes 13 Boeing 737 (300-400-700-800 series) and 7 Canadair CRJ-200. The 737’s have two-class layout (Business, called Sahara Royal and Economy, called Sahara Special). The seat pitch is quite good (better than most of European airlines). The aircraft have small monitors, that fall down from the ceiling, offering short Indian movies or route map with flight track. There are also some music channels (Indian and international). The headsets are distributed free of charges. The catering services is superb. Hot meals, in Economy, on all flights longer than 60 minutes. Five course meals in Business. In both classes you get free drinks, alcohols included.
Cabin crew with efficiency and kindness (only drawback is their English that is quite difficult to understand).
On-time performance is the base of Air Sahara policy “Customer Satisfaction”. All the three flights I had with Air Sahara were perfectly on-time.
This airline ha a “frequent flyers” scheme called Cosmos. Passengers can accrue miles on each flight, miles that can be redeem for free flight.
Air Sahara flight could be booked worldwide through travel agents. On Air Sahara web site you can book and buy only tickets for Economy class. Unfortunately passengers that are not of Indian nationality or are not legal residents of India pay higher price than Indian citizens.
I have flown, in Sahara Royal class, from Mumbai (Bombay) to Goa and I paid Euro 240 return; and from Mumbay to Kolkata (Calcutta) for Euro 296 one way. Undoubtedly low prices with superior services if compared with European routes of same flight time. If I was an Indian citizen I could pay only Euro 120 and 104 respectively.
Finally an airline to use to fly within India or to Nepal or Sri Lanka departing from India. A reliable airline, with a modern fleet well maintained, that offer a superior service along with on-time performance.
