I survived AirTransat--but barely. In order to get a cheap flight between London and Toronto, I bought a ticket that was part of a charter flight block. Most of the passengers were on a package holiday. Check-in was chaos in Toronto. One passenger almost got in a fight with an AirTransat employee when he found out about the excess baggage charge and the extra line he had to stand in. I had to do this too (the charge and the line, not the fight). A flight attendant tried to get me to stop nursing my baby on the flight (which I refused to do). A supervisor came and spoke to me. I politely told her I would continue to nurse my child, and I would call the Canadian authorities when I returned. They eventually left me alone without treating me like a hijacker. Once in London I tried to get a return ticket on the major British airline, but it was three times more expensive. So. . . the return check-in at Gatwick was, if possible, even worse than in Toronto. That must have been what steerage class felt like as emigrants travelled to America in the nineteenth century. I slept through as much as I could, including the rerouting through Montreal. Never again AirTransat. Never again cut-rate airlines. I go boldly commercial wherever I go now.
