I flew with Air Transat from Newcastle Airport for the first time to get me on my 6 week adventure to Canada. So how did I find them?
Outbound Our outbound journey we arrived at Newcastle 2 hours before check in and sailed through very quickly, was very impressed with the service at the airport.
The flight itself took off about 30 minutes late but with a tail wind we got into Toronto at exactly the right time, unfortunately I can't guarantee tail winds for everyone!! My friend and I paid extra about £14 each for having just 2 seats together and I really recommend this option. We had so much leg room and space and managed to get comfortable enough to sleep most of the way! Once in Toronto we seemed to get through customs and collect our cases very easily, not sure if this is always the case but maybe we were just having a very lucky day! All in all it was a pretty easy and uneventful flight and went without any problems.
Return Now for the return flight, we arrived at Toronto airport and again got through check in fairly quick the only slight problem was I went over on the luggage and had to pay $70 dollars, the other case was well under but it seems that they only just go on the one case these days and don't let you spread the 20kilo weight across 2 cases which used to happen years ago. We were about an hour late in boarding and this time big mistake we were in the 3 seats and the leg room was awful, I spent the flight shuffling about probably annoying everyone but I just couldn't get comfortable! Luckily this time the flight only took 6 hours and 6 minutes to get back to the UK any longer and I think I would have seized up. We made it back onto UK soil and I was so glad to be able to walk although by this time my ankle had swollen and I was limping, was a pretty long walk in Newcastle to customs and baggage reclaim but maybe you need that walk after being cramped up for so long!
Air Transat The facilities on Air transat were basic, only couple of large TV screens so if you wanted to watch a movie it is a bit hard to see, but in my opinion I can read on the flight or listen to music and catch a movie anytime so this didn't bother me. The food, well its airplane food never the best and have to say the chicken pasta on the return I took one look, one bite, then left it, not the best but I don't think any airplane food is ever too good unless your lucky and can afford the business and first class. I found the staff on the flight were very polite and helpful and have no complaints there.
Final Opinion In summary if you want a low cost flight to Canada and are not too fussed on watching the TV and what food you are given then I recommend going with Air Transat. They are cheap and cheerful, nice staff and I'd rather pay bit less money to get away and use the saved cash for my holiday. All I'd say is maybe eat before you board and I certainly would say pay the £14 extra for the 2 seats if you can get them, its worth it and may stop any more ankles swelling up!!
