Advantages: friendly, cheap, english speaking Disadvantages: limited things to do
...to make your day perfect. They had even arranged for a minibus to collect us from the Alameda Gardens and drop us back in town later in the afternoon. Before I move, I should mention that Gibraltar's Barbary apes are known to climb down from the Rock into the Caleta, so be careful where you put your bags. We didn't suffer any casualties, but we heard a few horror stories!
ACCOMODATION
There are around 8 good-sized hotels on the Rock. We, and our guests, stayed at the 2 star Queens Hotel, which was cheap and cheerful. The Queens Hotel is situated close to the bottom of Gibraltar's cable car (a 10 min taxi ride from the airport) so it's perfectly located great for nipping to the top of the Rock for 360 degree views across to Spain and around to Africa. The inside of the Queens is a cross between a 30s spanish villa and an alpine cottage...

Advantages: Good food and drink Disadvantages: Location is slightly remote - occasional poor buffet experience
...I only stayed at Playa Alameda in February 2006 for a couple of days to chill out after a bit of backpacking around Cuba, and am extremely glad I did choose this hotel.
It is remotely located in Varadero and as you will see this has its plus and minus points. It does make it difficult and possibly costly to reach. We paid quite a lot just for a taxi from the coach station to the resort.

Bathrooms had both a separate shower and bath,
It is worth trying to get a room with an ocean view. This will mean a slightly longer walk to the reception area...

Advantages: All facilities, great shopping, good base for day trips Disadvantages: Very modern city, not much of 'real' Mexico, some may find boring
...in the south of the city (Parque Agua Azul), with a beautiful collection of butterflies, and a huge zoo overlooking a canyon, which is breathtaking.
In addition, Guadalajara is a good base to visit other colonial cities such as Morelia (highly recommended, beautiful small colonial town with great culture and indigenous villages as well as mountains, natural spas and forests).
I would recommend Guadalajara as a base or a day trip rather than a destination in itself, but if you are looking to learn Spanish, travelling with children or enjoy a lot of comfort it's a good place to stay too.
However if you are a backpacker or student, you may find it a bit too much like any other modern city and prefer to go to smaller towns with more character....
