In March of this year I booked a short stay in the south of france for the first week in August for myself and family. I arranged flights, accommodation and car hire at this time. I decided that the best hire car company to use would be Alamo, as I have used them before in Florida and was very impressed with their service. They had a good reputation. I aquired a reservation number off the internet for a car that suited our requirements and obtained a reservation number. E-mails were subsequently received from Alamo thanking me for my reservation and a reminder just before our trip etc. Things went downhill however upon our arrival at Nice airport on the date arranged. Upon completing check in and luggage collection we proceeded to the Alamo desk, confident that we would be underway in no time. Big, big queue. Alamo desk could just about be spotted somewhere at the front of a long winding queue of disgruntled, exhausted looking people. Ok I thought, It doesn't take too long to process car hire. I appreciated it was busy and prepared to wait. 1 hour later and the queue hadn't moved one inch. Word was filtering back through the queue that "They've run out of cars!". I couldn't believe it! After practically no sleep for 24 hours due to an early start I was feeling pretty frazzled, and my pregnant wife and young toddler were becoming fractious to say the least. Ultimately, people were either shouting at the counter staff or finding hire elsewhere. I myself found a French hire company at the end of the concourse called ADA and was in a car within the hour hastle free. It beggers belief that a hire company such as Alamo could treat people this way. I thought they were a worldwide company dedicated to customer service. I thought wrong. I have sent two e-mails to Alamo customer service. After almost two weeks. Nothing. If you use Alamo in the US you should be ok. If in Europe. Be careful.
