The arrivals hall at Alicante is fairly simple with about 6 luggage belts, loos, plenty of trolleys and an bureau de change. Baggage arrival time seems on a par with most tourist airports to me.
About a dozen car rental desks are located along the corridor that you pass through from the arrivals hall to the main part of the airport. Car's can be hired on spec, however it is always much cheaper to research prices on-line prior to your trip and book in advance, even if it's just 48 hours before.
Queues can take a long time for car rental, so my top tip is that if only one of you is driving then that person should go and sort out the car while the other(s) collect their luggage for them.
If you are on a package holiday or property inspection visit, you will usually find your tour rep or guide waiting for you immediately outside the exit to the arrivals hall. Tour buses are then usually parked in special slots immediately outside the airport.
Normal Buses and Taxi's can also be caught immediately outside the airport.
I usually hire a car, and have done so through many different companies at Alicante and so far they have ALL had the vehicles on-site, so it's simply over the road into the car park to collect the car and away you go. The car park is a bit compact and when combined with driving an unfamiliar car in a new place, this first part of your onward journey can be a bit nerve wracking, however on the plus side, it will make the rest of your stay seem like plain sailing!
When departing from Alicante airport, the Check-in hall usually offers a nice cool retreat from the heat of the spanish sun. There is just the one terminal with about 30 check-in desks however they are all in a straight row so not too difficult to find the right one - unlike say gatwick which has lots of different "zones". There are also several displays with flight info including check-in desk and gate details.
If travelling independantly on a summer charter flight, inevitably you will find a massive queue of package holiday makers waiting to check in before you, who arrived en-masse by coach 3 hours before departure. However, if you are using a scheduled(including budget) airline, it's usually not so bad. I also find that often a single queue seems to form for 2 or 3 desks, so it although looks long, it moves quite quickly. I invariably find that I have to move out of the way of someone with a supersized mop cleaning the floor every time I queue to check-in!
Also in the check-in hall are some "last minute ticket" outlets, although I've never used one so can't comment on their prices.
Once you have checked-in then it's up the escalator or lift upstairs, where there's a paper shop (with international papers) and a cafe, just before the entrance to the departure lounge.
If you are a smoker, there is also a tabocconist here, which I have ALWAYS found to be cheaper than the "Duty Free" shop inside departures. It's only small, with a hatch-like opening, but it is one of those with the brown sign as found throughout Spain. However, I think it opens as per other tabacs, so is closed for siesta/sundays etc, so dont rely on it being open!
Inside departures, the number of shops has grown over recent years, although in all honesty I consider these as being something to pass the time rather than to shop in, as prices are typically about 25-50% higher than local supermarket prices. There is a fairly large "duty free" gift shop (although obviously it's not when travelling between Spain/UK), a music shop, a small selection of clothes and jewellery outlets, childrens shop (possibly Disney?), another newsagents and a shop selling typical spanish foods and drinks.
For food and drink there is a self service cafe, a Haagen Daaz (mmmmmmm!!) concession, Burger King and an 'english style' pub which also serves meals and snacks. Be aware that if you have a night-time (or very early morning) flight that everything except maybe the cafe is closed by 11pm.
There is plenty of seating in the departure lounge, which is situated lengthways along the building, with panoramic views over the runway!
When boarding your flight, all the gates are within the same hall, so no worries about a 20 minute dash from the bar to the plane! Planes are usually accessed direct from the building for departure.
Personally, I have experienced only one delay of more the 30 minutes in 10 years of using Alicante. This was for just 2 hours and was due to additional baggage checks just 3 days after the 9/11 attrocity, so understandable.
In comparrison to UK airports, I would say that in terms of size and layout it's falls between East Midlands and Birmingham
With cheap flights available from all over Europe including most UK regional airports and within an hours transfer of some diverse parts of the Costa Blanca, its an airport that suitable for all sorts of travellers.
Advantages: Good location, decent amenities Disadvantages: Can't think of any
I use Alicante airport for my annual break in Spain and find it is convenient and fairly easy to use. It is situated just outside Alicante on the Costa Blanca, around 46.5km from Benidorm. It is within driving distance of Valencia, around two hours and 179km. Arrivals You would probably fly to Alicante if you were staying in Benidorm, Torrevieja, Altea, Calpe, Moraira or Teulada. It is popular with budget airlines such as Easyjet and Bmibaby and ... ...usually much better. Alicante airport is located right off the AP-7/N-332 motorway which leads north towards Benidorm and south towards Torrevieja. It is clearly signposted and easy to access. Sometimes the barriers controlling access have been known to not work, although that has only happened once to the person picking me up from the airport. There is a car park situated right opposite the entrance to the airport which usually has a lot of space, ...

Advantages: clean, good facilities Disadvantages: long check in queues
Alicante airport is located on the spanish Costa Blanca, in the valencia region of the country, and is owned by Aena and Iberia. It has recently undergone a major extension adding more gates tothe existing terminal and adding a terminal 2.
The first thing you get to on arrival at alicante airport, after getting off the plane is an empty passport control box. That's right, there is a passport control box but never anyone there to check the passports ... ...easy.
When flying from Alicante the story is somewhat different. The first thing you get to is a row of check in desks with very very very very very.......very very very long queues, which in the past I have known to take over two hours to get down, and even having queues outside in the airport's car park. Not the best sight and experience for going back home from holiday. After this you go up some esculators to a small concourse with a couple of ...

Advantages: Central arrival and departure point for the Costa Blanca Disadvantages: Road is the only access, no trains
First impression when you arrive here to catch a plane is the queues!! They seem to stretch right around the concourse and usually move exceedingly slowly.
The area for over sized luggage is very poorly signposted, I am sure travellers with golf clubs, and the one poor couple I saw with a child stair gate, are throughly fed up when they finally locate it.
On up the escalator , through the security checks and into the departure lounge. this could ... ...king and a Haagen Daas outlet, one newspaper and magazine shop.
Duty Free shopping is available for all but beware.....cigarettes are more expensive by about 3 Euro a carton than they are in a normal Spanish tobacconist, so if you want to take cigarettes back buy them before going to the airport. alcohol is also more expensive.
The departure area is clean and has several washroom and lavatory areas.
No provision in the way of play areas made for ...

Advantages: Slick website to sucker you in Disadvantages: Hidden charges, especially fuel surcharge, poor sevice by car hire companies
We have used the CarJet hire car service many times from both Alicante and Murcia airports when we go to our little place in the sun. CarJet is in the business of providing one of the cheapest car hire options. Their website is great and we have never had any difficulies re payment and the many bookings, but beware of the optional extras and how they sucker you and me when you arrive at Alicante or Murcia.
CarJet operates by buying a number of block bookings with a variety of car hire companies and then resells them to CarJet customers. They act as pimps and tout for business, never a problem if the whore is value for money, but like true pimps they never explain the true cost up front (ok, don't ask how I know). Since CarJet are simply selling bookings they are not interested in customer service or customer satisfaction ...
Advantages: None Disadvantages: My son & his girlfriends holiday was ruined.
I booked a car for my son and his girlfriend to be picked up at Alicanteairport at 11.30pm on 27th July. When they arrived, they were told that there were no cars available, even though we had received a confirmation email from holiday autos and the money had been deducted from my debit card.
I spoke on the phone to holiday autos customer support the following morning (28th) and requested a refund. This has still not been received.
My advice would be not to use Holiday Autos as they supply cars through a 3rd party and have no control over the availability of cars. There were about 30 customers who were unable to get their cars on that night. I'm sure that Holiday Autos will still be gaining the interes on the monies paid by these disappointed customers for a service that Holiday Autos didn't provide.
Use one of the main car ...
Advantages: Cheap Disadvantages: Horrendous customer service
Everything fine with actually getting the car, using the car. However when we took the car back to Alicanteairport, they had a look round and said that we owed them three hundred and twenty four euros because of damage to one side of the car. We refused to pay it because it was like that when we picked it up and having only used the car a few times during our 10 day stay, there was absolutely no way we were giving them money for something we hadn't done. Eventually they told us that they had decided not to charge us on this occasion, but for future reference if any damage is caused, they will charge direct to our card. How about for future reference we won't use Carjet! ...
