Playa de San Juan - An excellent hotel
Advantages: Friendly staff, lovely pool, clean room Disadvantages: Dynamic currency conversion on our room costs paid by debit card
We chose to visit the Holiday Inn Alicante Playa de San Juan for a week in July after having three very pleasant stays in Express by Holiday Inns in the UK. We were not sure what to expect in terms of quality, however it was probably one of the best hotels that we have ever stayed in.
The cost was €94 per night for an en suite room with king size bed and an “almost double” sofa bed. The room was on the third floor of the hotel and had a view of ... ...beds, the bed at the Holiday Inn was very comfortable and actually allowed you to have a full night's sleep! The windows had a very thick curtain which completely blocked all light – perfect for a lie-in on a sunny morning! A mini-bar was present, although this seemed quite expensive compared to the vending machines in the tennis court area (e.g. €1.90 for a can of soft drink in the mini-bar, €1.00 for the same item in the vending machine). The bathroom ...

Castilla Hotel Alicante Playa San Juan
Advantages: close to the beach Disadvantages: service poor.
...spent a week at the Castilla and have returned home very disappointed with the hotel itself and the concrete jungle in which it resides. To start with the pluses: The hotel is spotlessly clean - though we did find in our room a cockroach of the sort of proportions which might have got it some extra work in the film "Alien". The cleaning staff and indeed all the female staff working in the hotel were helpful and efficient, pleasant to talk to and ... ...None of the male staff measured up to the female. Surly, unhelpful and distant are the kindest words I can find. The food was poor - it was never served warm. Maybe it is a Spanish tradition to serve mashed potato and vegetables cold. If so it is not one that I have encountered before. The shops in the area are full of delightful fresh fruit and vegetables. Why did the hotel only serve tinned? The menus gave no indication of what the food actually ...

Excellent Location, Lovely hotel
Advantages: Location, price, rooms Disadvantages: some rooms don't have good views, noise at night
I have been in this hotel on two separate occasions, and although it has some flaws that other people may not find acceptable, I would most defiantly recommend this hotel. This hotel is in a very central place, quite possible one of the best locations if you want to see the city. It is situated in the old town, close to the Castillio Santa Barbara (the main castle), The port, Cathedral. Church of Santa Maria, town hall and museums. Its also about ... ...Postiguet. Generally, the location is very good, but there are a couple of draw backs. Firstly, the distance from the train station if you're planning on visiting the local area. It will take about 20 minutes to walk there, however, you can easily catch a bus. Secondly, the noise. Now generally in Alicante, no matter what hotel you stay in you will get general noise from the streets. However, this hotel is located on the edge an area called 'El Barrio', ...

A Great Place for a Sunshine Break in a Gorgeous Spanish Town
Advantages: 3 Swimming Pools, Lovely Spa, Family and Couple Friendly, Great Food Disadvantages: Food is pricey, beach is stoney, a bit of a trek from Alicante Airport
...6 night break at the SH Villa Gadea. We were looking for a hotel in Altea/Calpe for a sunshine break at the beginning of September ’09. We couldn’t get into our first choice hotel further along the coast and we were a little nervous about this one as there aren’t many reviews on it. We flew from Manchester with BMI Baby – flight is less that 3 hours. The hotel is 60km from Alicante airport and getting there is not easy via public transport so either ... ...bet. We opted for a taxi and it cost around 80 euros. On arrival at the hotel (around 4pm ish), we were checked in by the staff at the front desk. Not the quickest and most efficient service I have ever experienced but non the less, they were all polite, spoke good English and a young lad took our bags up to our room. We were more than pleased with the room, as we had been upgraded to a Superior Room on the first floor (room 1110). We had a fabulous ...

Middle of nowhere
Advantages: well maintained attractive hotel Disadvantages: hard to get anywhere
...confirmed. What a mistake! The hotel is very isolated and we do not drive. There was supposed to be a shuttle bus from the hotel to Alicante and El Campello but this does not run on Monday or Tuesday. On Monday we decided to brave public transport to reach Alicante. We had to walk for ten minutes up to the nearest roundabout- the only real civilisation near the hotel where there are a couple of bars and restaurants. From there we could get a bus ... ...all the trip from the hotel takes about 90 minutes or more. Coming back on the first day we missed the last bus from Mutaxmiel because we couldn't find the bus stop. We tried in vain to get a taxi. In the end we called the hotel and asked them to ring for one. They refused initially which was very annoying. We don't speak Spanish and were totally stranded. My husband had to call them again before they finally agreed to get one for us. When we got ...
