Apart from the speed and the traffic the thing I noticed was the wonderful display of spring flowers along the roadside all the way from the Airport into the city. They were truly stunning, a variety of colours in blocks of reds, pinks, yellows and so on. There were mainly tulips and primroses and we must have been there just at the right time to catch them at their best. I wasn?t expecting any flowers so too see this colourful show was an even greater surprise, I could have been in Holland it was so impressive.
The hotel is in the old part of Istanbul and right on the street with the tram line along the street. We were slightly worried as we were driven along the tramline then the taxi stopped outside the hotel door on the tramline. We discovered that the trams do stop in ...

an old converted Ottaman house, which it is. However the photo cunningly conceals the fact that it is surrounded by other hotels, two directly adjacent and all up and down the road, all of the same period, and all prettily redecorated.
It is not for me to judge the others, most of which are smaller, and some certainly cheaper, but all very attractive from the outside.The most attractive hotel in this immediate area appeared to be the Four Seasons, but here you're talking big money.
Finally I want to mention the most useful discovery - the local tramway system - signposted and understood locally to be "tramvay"
My using the tramvay, you can really get around Istanbul very cheaply and with no hassle. The ride from Obelisk Square down to the waterside is really sceneful in smart modern 4 coach trains, and takes three stops ...

large buildings springing up all around. It seems to me that this is a high class hotel built speculatively for when the area will be a commerce centre, and already it seems to be host to many conferences and weddings with its various facilities.
RECEPTION AREA
You might be shocked to see a metal detector and security guards on your way in, but I have noticed this to be normal in Istanbul, from businesses to hospitals and shopping malls, so don?t worry. In any case the guards are very friendly here.
This area is quite large, with the reception desk to the right, and entrance to the patisserie here also, which is easily missed. Past the reception on the right is entry to the restaurant and breakfast area. Opposite this are 2 comfortable sofas and low coffee tables. Straight on are the stairs down to the English Bar and business area ...
