~The Place~
I was born and grew up in Manchester, Jamaica near the south coast of Alligator Pond. Alligator Pond is located In St Elizabeth 35 km from Mandeville, the parish capital. Alligator Pond has a large fishing beach, well equipped with modern fibreglass boats plus high powered outboard engines. Some boats are available for hire, where the prices are negotiable. The name Alligator Pond have nothing to do with real life alligators but because of the shape of the mountain range, which you can see from the beach, has bumps which suggest an alligator's back. The sea is an ideal spot for some scuba diving, snorkelling or if you're feeling really adventurous I would suggest some nude bathing.
Alligator Pond is a very nice place to visit away from the clamours of tourism and the hustle and bustle of larger towns. Alligator Pond is well known for its fishing beach and famous Restaurant Little Ochie with a relaxing atmosphere.
There is an attractive Conference facility with a great ocean view, and a family fun and retreat area. So if you feel like getting away from the busy and noisy activity of the urban areas and would like to relax in a great atmosphere of ambiance, Alligator Pond is totally the place to visit.
The popular restaurant known as Little Ochie located in Alligator Pond. For those who are fed up (pardon my language), it's a fairly short journey from the French fried nausea to a deep nostalgia for the "home cooked", plateful. It is hard to call Little Ochie a restaurant in the traditional sense. Perhaps, because it is situated on the beach in one main building with several satellite thatched structures, some of them are boats, so you don't get a table with white clothe on it, , which makes the atmosphere very casual and friendly. Don't get me wrong. Underneath the relaxed atmosphere and the casual and relaxed manner of the staff is a very professional and well oiled operation.
One of the fascinating things about Little Ochie is that you get to see and choose your food before it is cooked. You can go with the server to select fresh seafood directly from the ice chest and have it cooked to order. You determine how you want your seafood prepared, and you relax until it is served.
~The menu~
There is not much food to choose from on the menu because Little Ochie mainly serves seafood, but a lot of different styles of preparation.
Starters - The Spicy Fish Tea This is a soup despite the name made from Doctor Fish and Welchman, well seasoned with herbs, cooked with vegetable.
The price of the meals varies from (us$4-$15). The food like the fish, lobsters and shrimp are normally sold in weight you can also buy fresh seafood to take home as well from the local fishermen.
Alligator Pond is near a lot of holiday cottages and landmarks with evocative names like CUCKOLD POINT, OLD WOMAN'S POINT, GUT RIVER, CANOE VALLEY, ALLIGATOR HOLE RIVER and GOD'S WELL.
Not a very popular place but if you like a quiet get away and authentic food I would suggest Alligator pond you won't be disappointed.
