A garden to die for!

Advantages: Plenty to see and do for both adults and children
Disadvantages: None

The Alnwick Garden in Northumberland is a really lovely place to visit, as I discovered recently when in the area.
I had decided to visit on the recommendation of a friend who had recently spent a day there, and had spent quite a while telling me about it afterwards. I was intrigued to find out more and visit here myself, as although I live in the North East and have visited many places in Northumberland, I had never visited The Alnwick Garden.
...

The Alnwick Garden is situated just off the A1 at Alnwick in Northumberland, and is well signposted if travelling by car.
Buses connect Alnwick to surrounding towns and also Newcastle.
If travelling by train, the east coast line stops at Alnmouth which is 4 miles away.

Gardening on a Grand Scale

Advantages: Relaxing, Open all year, Good visitor facilities
Disadvantages: Expensive, Can get very busy, Signposting could be better

The Alnwick Garden is the third most visited pay-for-entry garden in the UK, attracting around half a million visitors in 2004. I think this is a pretty impressive figure when you consider that Alnwick is not on what you might consider the major tourist routes - in fact, it is in a fairly remote corner of the country, situated in the middle of rural Northumberland. However, since it first opened to the public in 2002, it has fast become the most ...
...land within the grounds of Alnwick Castle and decided to do something positive with it by creating a beautiful, publicly accessible space for the local community. The garden was intended from the outset to be a place of contemplation, of fun, of learning and of inspiration for those who visited it. It has been designed on an impressive scale: world-renowned Belgian garden designer Jacques Wirtz was brought in for his first commission in the UK, while ...

A place for memories to be made

Advantages: Interesting, beautiful and plenty to see and do for all the family
Disadvantages: I don't live nearer

...made my second visit to Alnwick Gardens on the 16th January. Unfortunately, I was there for a reception following the funeral of the wonderful man and dear friend who first introduced me to this magical place. He and his wife were staunch supporters of the gardens and enjoyed their beauty regularly with their children and gorgeous grandchildren. At the risk of making a simple review a little on the emotional side, I write this review in honour of ...
...From that time, until the Alnwick Garden restoration project began in 1996, the site was used as a tree nursery. Today As many resources as possible were locally sourced, including the water cascade stone which was brought from West Woodburn The Gardens *************** What makes these striking gardens unique is the fact that visitors are actively encouraged to participate in their surroundings. You see children running through the jets of water ...

Haggerston Castle Haven Park

Advantages: Great Chinese Buffet Restaurant on site. Good location. V. near A1
Disadvantages: V. near A1. Extortionate price at shops/takeaways on site.

Haven would be a great place to take kids, but we always book a bit out of season, and usually save up the tokens in the Sun newspaper, so we usually get a great cheap deal. The Place Haggerston Castle is set back off the A1 in Northumberland. The site is 7 miles away from Berwick upon Tweed. It is also North of Alnwick & Alnwick Castle &Gardens which is efianately worth a visit. There are a host of things to do in the area as it lies on the edge of Northumberland National Park, and is close to Bamburgh, Alnwick, Berwick and Holy Island. You are also within driving disatnce of sections of Hadrians Wall - Also well worth a visit. The Site It has the usual array of family friendly entertainment, and that silly bloody tiger. The games arcade is pretty sizeable, and noisy as hell. The site itself is big, and we were located ...

City of Culture? An Insider's View

Advantages: It's the place I call home so I have the inside knowledge on this lively and friendly city
Disadvantages: Newcastle is in danger of disappearing up it's own backside

year Newcastle has seen the likes of Electric Six, The Darkness, Simply Red, UB40, The Flaming Lips, Placebo, the Stereophonics and many more. Slightly further out of the city is the beautiful and dramatic Northumberland coast and, inland, an increasingly popular attraction is Alnwick Castle with it's marvellous new water gardens and the site where much of the Harry Potter movies were filmed. There is plenty for history enthusiasts to see along Hadrians Wall and this year saw the official opening of a path which now allows walkers to follow the entire length of the Wall. Those less inclines to put on the walking boots may prefer to check out the city's shoppig facilities. Geordies love to shop! Newcastle can boast a modern centre in Eldon Square and Northumberland Street which has all the big names and there are some lovely ...
