L'Ile Au Soleil

Advantages: Great range of slopes, good night life
Disadvantages: No tree line ski-ing, expensive

...the purpose-built ski resort of Alpe d’Huez markets itself (hmm, I do have to admit I find myself querying the island bit... but it certainly is sunny!) has to be one of Europe’s top ski destinations. I’ve returned year after year, sometimes twice a season, since 1997 and so have tonnes of others and my aim is to let you know exactly why!

SKI AREA
Alpe d’Huez lies in the southern most area of ...
...consists of 5 principle areas Alpe d’Huez, Auris, Oz, Villard Reculas, Vaujany, covers over 10,000 hectares and boasts 86 ski lifts 111 slopes (220 kms), 54 kms of cross-country trails and 30 kms of hiking tracks. 24 “piste bashers” and 700 snow cannons serve the area (although only working when the temp. is between –3°C and –7°C). It also boasts the longest black run in Europe, La Sarenne, measuring 16km.

What a place to visit and not just for skiing

Advantages: many
Disadvantages: none

Alpe De Huez is one of the furthest south in France and is approximately 6000ft about sea level. After just comming back from a week there with my family I thought I ought to reccomend it to people as it was so good. So what was so good about it and makes it better than other resorts then? Well in my opinion there is many advantages to spending a holiday here. Firstly it is cheap in the school holidays. We had a studio/self catering apartment ...
...the cable car. Alpe De Huez is where some of the Tour De France is done and every day you would see people on their bikes and riding up to the resort from the bottom. People were also roller skiing up the hill. They were so fit over there. We also took a drive out to a waterfall which was about half an hour from our resort out on the back road. I felt a week was long enough here as most things on site had been done and achieved within a week. I think ...

A ski resort of adventure

Advantages: Skiing for all levels
Disadvantages: When I had to leave

Alpe d'Huez is where I have spent the last 4 seasons skiing, and I have to say I want to live there. This resort is one of the best resorts I have ever been to, with slopes for all types of people to Beginner’s (which is what I was when I first went there) to expert. This resort has the longest black ski run in the world it is massive and I have to say personally very scary and I refuse to even look down it otherwise ski down it. The slopes ...
...also, many youngsters are there going down the slopes at a hundred miles per hour with no fear in the world. The Ski School there are also excellent, all of the instructors can speak perfect English and you are not mixed with other tourists from other countries so you do not feel left out, at al. All the stages in Ski School are specific and it is almost impossible to get into the wrong class. I have attended the Ski School there for three years ...

Boarders Won't Be Bored & Skiers Delighted

Advantages: Variety of green, blue and red pistes. Wide pistes
Disadvantages: Potentially low snow fall in Dec & early Jan

...week of skiing in Alpe d'Huez (2-8 Jan 05) staying at Chalet Bruyeres with First Choice. I recommend going on a ski/boarding holiday in a large group to keep the costs down - I went as part of a group of 19 and we booked approx 6 months prior to the holiday. This meant the cost for a skier including hire, ski pass, insurance and chalet with breakfast, afternoon tea, evening meal and free wine was £530 and for a boarder was £544. Not bad! The transfer ...
...main roads. TOWN Alpe d'Huez is 1865 metres up in the Alps which is a lot higher up (before even ascending the pistes ready for skiing) than most resorts. The altitude had quite an effect on our health and we had to remind each other to drink extra water and take a rest from skiing more frequently than we would normally have done. A number of our party felt dizzy at times - and it wasnt the Stella! There are a lot of great reasonably priced clothes/ski ...

Alpe D huez

Advantages: Everything
Disadvantages: soggy afternoons

...with my dearly beloved to Alpe D’Huez for a week in March 2000. We stayed in a First Choice “Fine dining” Chalet (Chalet Telemark). We were glad we didn’t go for their ordinary fare as it was only a bit better than average (I’m a bit of a “foodie” though). The Chalet itself was nice enough, en suite rooms and a good view from the balcony. There are plenty of shops and bars nearby, and it was also located quite close to a lift. It wasn't quite "ski-to-door", ...
...shared the Chalet with were a good laugh, and for those travelling as a couple that enjoy socialising, Chalets are a good option. The Underground was our local bar. Nice and noisy, it was full of mad Scandinavians and served a good range of drinks. The skiing area is great, a lot of variety and not much motorway stuff. As we were here in March, the snow was getting pretty wet in the afternoons as the sun beat down, but if you moved to north facing ...

Good fun for all

Advantages: Plenty of different stuff to play on
Disadvantages: Crowded at peak weeks

Alpe d'Huez is a great place for all the family. Like many of the famous French resorts, it has something for everyone and fairly good lifts to match. The Tour De France goes there most years in the summer, so if you want to know how ugly a ski resort looks in the summer, have a look on TV. At the top there is some quite steep stuff for those who want it. Plus plenty of motorway runs for the easy riders. This place can get very busy though. Peak ...
...time is great. When I went I got stuck on the mountain road, so if your going to drive, take the snow chains, like condoms, you never know when you might need to pop them on. This is package holiday heaven. That means if you don't like big groups then stay away. Overal though a great place to go if you've got a week to go away in Fed / March. ...

Chalet Isis - Chalets De l'altiport Alpe D'Huez

Advantages: Ski in, ski out,
Disadvantages: In the middle of nowhere

My wife and I stayed with some friends at Chalet Isis in the Chalets de l'Altiport area of Alpe D'Huez 1850 in March 08. We booked through skialacarte. The altiport chalets are all pretty new and are in a gated community situated over the road from the small airport, and about 600 metres from the Les Bergers part of Alpe D'Huez, with the main town a few hundred metres further away. Access was via Grenoble International Airport St Geoirs - 99 kms away and the private transfer by the chalet staff took 1 hour 25 minutes. The chalet sleeps 16 and the rest of the rooms were occupied by other guests. Each room had private ensuite facilities apart from one of the rooms on the ground floor which had a shower and WC room which was also the facility for people using the sauna. Nobody using the sauna ever used this room as far as we could see ...

Deux Alpes - once is enough

Advantages: Good for beginners, good nightlife, sunny, access to La Grave, free swimming/skating
Disadvantages: Limited skiing, not ideal resort layout, frustrating slope and lift layout at hometime

Located in the southern French Alps, and close to Alpe D'Huez and Serre Chevalier, Les Deux Alpes might not be the first ski resort that springs to mind when you think of European skiing. It's a little unfair as, on an individual basis, the resort compares extremely well to just about any in France. It is the second oldest in resort in the country, after the world famous Chamonix and can boast more than 200km of runs to itself. However, while 2 Alpes may individually have a large ski-area, it lacks the collective might of areas such as the Trois Vallees or Espace Killy when it comes to a linked network of slopes. Essentially, with 2 Alpes what you see is what you get. For most this won't be a problem - almost 100 different pisted slopes plus good opportunities to drop into off-piste powder fields should keep all but the most ...

Poor service - worse complaints process

Advantages: good resort
Disadvantages: poor service

We went to Alpe d'Huez with First Choice. Anything that wasn't under the control of First Choice was excellent - the weather, the skiing, the resort bars and restaurants. Almost anything under First Choices control was poor (except the food in the chalet which was pretty good). The rep oversold the excursions and couldn't help with anything that didn't make First Choice more money; although we'd booked at the last minute we were advised to buy our ski-passes with our tickets because this would be cheaper - turned out to be £50 more expensive; the water heating in the new purpose built chalet couldn't cope; advertised facilities in the chalet were missing; the departure coach was very late (but still managed to arrive at the airport unbelievably early for the plane) - which was very late in departing; there was no rep support ...
