Whenever friends of mine from the US or Canada are in Germany they ask me about one thing: THE DISNEY CASTLE Yes,you read right: Disney took the shape of Neuschwanstein and built the world famous Cinderella Castle after it.
So we go on an overnight trip to the south of Germany and visit Neuschwanstein. It is located in the Fussen area (the Alpine region) and a one hour drive from Munich. While the castle ist worth every penny of what you have to pay to see it, the waiting in line for it is something nobody likes. In the summer time thousands of people come to Neuschwanstein and want to see the castle. You either walk up ther(25 Minutes up the hill) or take a bus or an horse cart (1 hour wait on most days). Up there you have to stand in line for about 1 hour and a half to get your entrance tickets for the castle.
Then you have to wait again for your guided tour. There are 5 lines for 5 different languages: german, englisch, french, spanisch and japanese. Most of the time each line is long and you will spent at least an hour waiting again. Especially on hot days it is a pain. Every 30 Minutes one guided tour starts for each languages. With a 5 Minute delay between each group, that there aren´t any mixups or problems like that.
The castle itself was built in the 19th century by King Louie of Bavaria. He was a little crazy about building castles and so there is another one of his castles just across the hill callen Neuenschwangau. He died being politicly dead by drwoning in the lake nearby. Neuschwanstein is the most famous castle in germany and it really is a beauty. Not only the outter view is great, but when you are inside you will learn how the king lived during that time. And see lots of old paintings, statues and carpets on the wall. Also old furniture as well. It is really great going there and seeing the castle, but better get there very early (around 8-9 a.m. at best),otherwise you will spent much more time in line, than inside. There are plenty of souvenier shops around the town and on the way up the hill, so everybody will be able to get his piece of this castle. I personally would never buy stuff like that, because they are made cheaply and are pretty expensive, but I am living in Germany and can go there whenever I please. My recommendation: Visit this castle at least once, when you are in germany.
