Since the inhabitants of Viterbo were supporting this congregation by giving them food, they finally decided that it was bit too much for their patience and locked the whole lot in a building until when a decision would be made, and, to give them a bit of encouragement, they deprived them of food. Needless to say, a Pope was soon found. The medieval part of the town, the historic centre, is well preserved.
