Thats Amara

Advantages: Brilliantly written
Disadvantages: Sadly Richard Laymon is dead, so new book releases will dry up if you become a fan

Some book reviews tend to spoil the ending or purpose of the book. So rather than tell you everything that happens in Amara by Richard Laymon I will write the description that is on the book cover and then give my views on the story. The cover description is:- Amara, Princess of Egypt, the once beautiful wife of Mentuhotep the first, lies in her coffin in the Charles Ward Museum. She has been dead for 4000 years and she?s just an inanimate bundle of withered skin and desiccated bone. Or is she? Barney the night watchman is the first to discover that the mummy?s coffin has been broken open. Then it?s the turn of two security guards to find that the Egyptian remains have been disturbed. It seems grave-robbers are at work; out to steal valuable artefacts, just as their kind have done for centuries. It?s a pity Barney and the guards can ...

Human Traces by Sebastian Faulks

Advantages: Amazing subject matter, well-handled and excellent characterisation
Disadvantages: May be a little long for some - but I didn't want it to end.

This amazing novel had me gripped from the very first line! I'm a massive fan of Sebastian Faulks, but had been put of this novel by reviews which said there were passages which were too long winded and scientific. Lesson one - read it yourself and make your own opinion! This is an incredible book, not quite up there with Birdsong (my favourite book of all time - so far) but still amazing. I can't describe the story better than Fauks himself so: "The story begins in the 1870s with the lives of two young men: Jacques Rebière, a peasant's son in Brittany, and Thomas Midwinter, a merchant's son in Lincolnshire. Jacques has a naturally scientific turn of mind, in which he is encouraged by the help of the local priest. He is inspired by his desire to find a cure for the mysterious illness of his elder brother Olivier -- who hears ...

Good gambling times in San Juan

Advantages: close to the beach, casino in the hotel, clean and friendly
Disadvantages: bus or taxi ride to the old San Juan, beach too small

This is a review of Radisson Ambassador hotel in Condado, San Juan in the island of Puerto Rico. I have just visited this beautiful island on a short vacation - I was there for 5 days. The flight from New York was about 4 hours. The First Impression: When I first arrived in Condado which is a hotel area of the city of San Juan on the north part of the coast, I was a little dissapointed. The neighbourhood of the hotel looked a bit dingy and run down. I took a short walk to the beach which is a block away and the street was dirty, old rusty cars parked on the street - you get the picture. The beach turned out to be tiny, nothing to shout about. The hotel however, I was impressed with. It was clean and looked well taken care of. Fortunately, my first impression was erased once I found out there is a much bigger beach a short walk ...
