...The Deep South has a bad reputation, what with all the movies and TV shows about backwards people and heavy accents and racial hatred. Charlotte rejects stereotypes and more, and yet it keeps the friendliness and the closeness and the caring the Deep South is also known for. It has one of the biggest financial districts in the United States and even has a national mint. It is the second or third largest insurance city, many companies being British, and thus has a thriving English culture there. You have all the traditional entertainments like motor racing and line dancing plus a thriving and recently revitalized downtown (or as they like to call it, "uptown") scene. Visit the Dillworth section for many microbrewed beers, and be sure to hit the coluseum if the Hornets are playing.... Read review

Advantages: Nice garden, good for family

...Schloss Charlottenburg is the last surviving palace of the city and it's a good example of Baroque architecture. It was built as a summer retreat for Sophie Charlotte, the first queen of Prussia. Inside the palace, the collection of antiques and painting really shows you the passion Sophie has for art and music. There is an impressive mosaic garden inside where you can take a walk. My personal impression of the garden is that it is a replica of the Palace de Versailles-well it is believed that Sophie was a big fan of the design used in the French court. On the garden grounds are two buildings: the mosoleum and the Belvedere.The mosoleum houses the tombs of a few former Prussian royals. As for the Belvedere, it used to be a teahouse but it is now the home of a collection of 18-19 century porcelain.... Read review

Advantages: cheap, good breakfast, friendly staff
Disadvantages: far from centre, bugs!

...Where should I start? Which problem should I tell you about first? We stayed in Quality Inn, Charlotte during October 2007. The chain is well known for it's luxury and good srvice, so we were looking forward to a quiet week of relaxation after a month of busy traveling. When we got a taxi from the train station to the hotel, we suddenly realised how far from the city centre this hotel was, despite advertising that it was central and had easy access to the centre of Charlotte. It cost a $20+ taxi ride to reach the hotel, which was situated in a small business park on the outskirts of the city centre. (The only saving grace we found was a delightful Chili's restaurant that served delicious cheap food and had friendly waiting staff.) The lobby was classy, with inviting leather sofas, a log fire and 50" TV. The staff were friendly... Read review
