I've just returned from a 3 night stay on the Amstel Botel with a friend - we are very regular visitors to the Dam.
The location is fantastic - our main reason for settling on this. Turn left out of the Centraal station, a couple of minutes through the bus bays and you are there. Be careful not to slip if the metal walkway is wet! With trams, the metro, trains and buses all going from the Centraal you can pretty much get to anywhere from here.
On arrival we found the receptionist more interested in talking to his female colleagues than checking us in. I don't think we made ourselves too popular asking for more hangers (there were only 2 in the room originally). The night porter is from Cape Verde and much more friendly and helpful.
Breakfast is a fairly basic continental buffet, if you're expecting a full English then you will be disappointed. However there are one or two bars and cafes nearby offering a good value English Breakfast.
Rooms are a little smaller than usual (as you would expect for a cruise ship). We had a room with a land view. To be more accurate, the view is construction of a large tower block or hotel and trains coming in and out of the Centraal station. You may hear a little screeching from early in the morning. The only annoyance was a small ledge sticking out of the wall above the beds. Sitting up to watch TV was uncomfortable and we banged our heads a few times! Every time we opened the bathroom door we could smell that traditional Amsterdam smell of weed, even though it is banned in the Botel.
Internet access: There is a T-Mobile Wireless hotspot and 1 PC in the bar area, but this is EUR13 per hour! You'd be well advised to use the Easy Internet Cafe about 5 minutes away on the Damrak - EUR2 an hour.
Television: In addition to the usual selection of basic cable channels there was Private Spice (hardcore porn, be wary of the kids flicking around!), Sport 1 (plenty of live Bundesliga and Premiership footy) and Film 1 (Hollywood blockbusters).
The maids start about 8am and work through to 4pm. They are quite keen to clean your room so you may get a few knocks on the door if you hang around during the daytime (we went mainly for Amsterdam's evening entertainment). Safe deposit boxes are in your room, ask for a lock and key at reception - deposit is EUR20, you get EUR18 back at the end of your stay.
The walls are pretty thin - on our final night we were kept awake by a couple next door enjoying themselves :-)
Although we had no real complaints about the Botel and it was a reasonable place to stay we will probably return to the City Hotel over the road - rooms are a lot bigger.
