I stayed on the Amstel Botel in May 2006 and was excited at the thought of staying in a ‘floating hotel’ within walking distance of the centre.
The Amstel Botel claims to have 175 comfortable rooms all with en-suite bathroom, satellite TV, telephone, radio and safe.
However, although every box is ticked as listed above, the rooms are quite small and the en-suite bathroom is so small that you could use the loo, wash your hair and brush your teeth all at the same time! The rooms are very basic and higher level rooms, canal side are better due to views. Cruises pass by continually and views are stunning on a sunny day. Just a note to add, there are no kettles or hair dryers provide so bring your own!
The Amstel Botel opened its doors more than twenty years ago, and is currently moored at Oosterdokskade, which is approximately 5 minutes walk from Amsterdam Central Station and a 10 minute walk into the Centre and Dam Square. Its excellent location makes the Amstel Botel a convenient starting point to explore Amsterdam.
The Amstel Botel has a breakfast restaurant on the first floor, a bar with TV, a pool table, a pinball machine, a jukebox and internet connection. Reception is also located on the first floor. Room service is carried out every day.
Breakfast is served every morning between 7am and 10.30am and has the full works. I was impressed with the breakfast as I expected a poor attempt at an English and Continental breakfast. There was everything from sausage and bacon, boiled egg and toast to cereal and yoghurt, bread and cheese with ham and plenty of other items. Drinks were free at meal times and again there were several choices available. Food was constantly replenished and was hot which again is usually hit and miss in breakfast buffets.
Room rates vary depending on season and the Botel is quite costly. However, for a hotel room with a great breakfast and location I felt it was worth it and compared to some of the hostels in the square, which have poor conditions and usually shared bathrooms, I was willing to pay the money.
Overall, the Botel gave me what I required in a room (even if they were small and very basic), and breakfast and the location of this hotel made up for any negatives.
I would recommend people to stay in the Amstel Botel as its location is fabulous and compared to its competitors in the same area, it is a little cheaper.
You could of course hire you own house boat, which is what I intend to do next time I visit Amsterdam.
