Exceptional service in the capital of "Don't Care"
Advantages: Super service, nice rooms Disadvantages: Not everyone will like the temporary nature of parts of the hotel
Arrival and Check In
We arrived by taxi from the airport - it took about 10 minutes and I can't say what it cost as I managed to stitch up the colleague I was with who was going on to the Mercure and so fell foul of the 'last one out picks up the bill' rule. My first impressions were mixed because the Novotel is currently undergoing a major renovation programme and the reception is camped out in what appears to be a marquee. I've had some ... ...so I was a bit nervous when I realised what was going on at this one. However, the charm and friendliness of the place soon put me at ease. The receptionist was astonishingly friendly which for any hotel in the Dutch capital (a city renowned for it's stroppy staff in a country with the worst 'don't give a damn' attitude in Europe) was a refreshing change. I have had several serious bust-ups with receptionists in Amsterdam hotels over the years ranging ...

A little gem too good to be true! book NOW!
Advantages: peaceful and relaxing, luxurious and so good value for money Disadvantages: none!! I mean it!
...the old town centre, the Banks Mansion is a four star deluxe hotel with 51 rooms and suite. Most of them are overlooking the canal but I wasn't so lucky! I booked this hotel last year via lastminute.com for a real bargain at 250£ for 2 nights with a delicious breakfast!!!
So, ok, I didn't have a view on the canal, but it quickly became my favourite hotel in Amsterdam ever since. It is not hard to find a real gem in Amsterdam; it is after all the ... ...Well not here, not at Banks Mansion. For everything in the mini bar is ABSOLUTELY FREE. Yes!!! FREE!!!
We didn't dare to touch anything at first, but we noticed a nice note saying everything was complimentary. I rung reception and they confirmed that it was indeed complimentary, and that if I wished to have a drink in the main foyer by the fireplace it was also complimentary!! Everything from little snacks to gin and Coca-Cola!!! Now that is a bargain!!!! ...

You'll be surprised what get for your Money!
Advantages: Location, Architecture & Frienly Staff Disadvantages: None
...nineteenth century buidings house the Rembrandt Residence Hotel, a glorious retreat from the bustling city of Amsterdam. This hotel modestly claims two stars and while the rooms are basic, they are clean and comfortably furnished and in my opinion this hotel could easily be three star property. The location is excellent, idealy situated between the Herengracht and the Singel canals, near Dam square and approximately ten minutes from the Central Train ... ...to almost floor windows adorned with heavy curtains that make the room incredibly cosy for those who need to block out the light! The windows open and are kept in place with a wooden batton, I initially found this difficult as the windows are heavy!
Ask for a room on the canal if you want to watch people going past or see the lights and moon shining on the water though I presume this could be noiser in the busy season.
The buffet style breakfast ...

How close should an airport hotel be?
Advantages: Nice enough hotel, good for meetings Disadvantages: Keep in mind the time you need to transfer to the airport
...and booked me into the Mercure Amsterdam Airport at a price of Euro135 for the night. My first reaction was horror - but I calmed down once I realised I was confusing the Mercure with the Ibis (another in the Accor hotel chain) where I'd once spent a very noisy and uncomfortable night. Once I knew it wasn't the Ibis, I was fine and quite happy to save a load of money on the cost of a hotel closer to the airport.
Getting There
When I arrived ... ...the free hotel shuttle bus and found, to my horror, that it would be a 45 minute wait for the next bus so I decided to take a taxi. The driver clearly didn't want to take me and told me there was a shuttle. "Yes, I know" I told him, but it won't be here for 45 minutes and I'm not willing to wait. He swore blind the shuttle was every 10 minutes and he only gave up the fight when I insisted that if he didn't want to take me, I'd speak to the taxi supervisor ...

Hotel for the tolerant
Advantages: cheap, good location Disadvantages: don't ask for an upgrade
The Best Western Eden Hotel is, unusually for Amsterdam, situated in an idyllic location next to one of the canals that decimate the city. It is within walking distance of many of the squares, flower markets and a short tram ride away from the city centre. There are plenty of places to eat and drink close by and we (me + wife) spent a couple of nights trying out the bars back in 2004. Hence, be prepared for sketchy memory and vague references to ... ...and lifts to the right. Best Westerns are very standard so if you've been in one you know what it'll look like. That's why I quite like them - no surprises, which may sound dull but who wants the staff to open your door to your room and say 'Surprise - crap isn't it?'
Checking in was very easy and the English was excellent from all staff.

This is where the 'weird' begins. We were given, apparently, a room upgrade to an 'apartment'. ...
