Basic Accomodation on a Budget in Amsterdam Centre
Advantages: Excellent prices when booked online. Clean, basic accomodation, superb location! Disadvantages: Very basic, long way up to 4th floor!
...accommodation. I was recommended this hotel by a friend who said it was basic but clean and the location was superb. He advised me to book online with www.bookings.nl (which I intend to also review shortly) to get the best price.
So I did, and sure enough, within minutes I was booked into the Hotel de Gerstekorrel for just 45 Euros a night for a single room WITH en-suite! There's gotta be some kind of catch I thought... well there is, slightly, ... ...the time did come, the hotel was surprisingly easy to find, being just off Dam Square on Dam Straat (heading over towards the seedier side of the city centre). It's in the middle of a bustling street and can be quite easy to walk past as it's basically just a door but if you keep your eyes peeled it's not too hard to spot.
The reception area is light and airy, I think it's been recently refurbished with nice lighting and modern steel railings etc. ...

Long gone glory
Advantages: Great location at Damrak square, inexpensive for a "5-star" hotel Disadvantages: Old-fashioned interieur & run-down furniture, no goodwill when complaining about bad room condition
I have stayed several times in the Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky in Amsterdam and I always thought it's a nice affordable 5-star hotel. The location is unbeatable, it lies just opposite the royal palace on Damrak Square. It's only one or two stops from the central station, if you are travelling light, you can even walk which will take you about 10 minutes.
The downside of the location is that Damrak Square is full of drug dealers - they sell not the ... ...stuff.
The hotel itself consists of a whole block of buildings which historically were merged into the the hotels body. So you will find a lot of different room types. The most expensive ones are high ceiling rooms facing Damrak Square. The interieur of the rooms is at least 20 years old, if not older.
Few people know that the Krasnapolsky also offers apartments for long term stays. By chance I was able to stay in one of those for a few days and ...

Never Again
Advantages: It was cheap Disadvantages: Everything you usually expect from a hotel... didnt deliver.
We stayed at the Botel for three nights in January 2008. Never Again!
To be fair we were looking for something relatively cheap and it sounded fun to stay on a floating hotel. The hotel cost us about £ 25-00 a night and we booked through easy jet. However as soon as we checked in we experienced problems as we were shown to a room with one single bed! The man tried to walk away whilst i was saying that we both wouldnt fit into this single bed. He ... ...three hours before another double room was cleaned. I have never experienced such bad organistaion, it was as if they expected us to take a single bed!! Well off we went to check out the hotel's facilities. P.s. there arent any. Only a bar with a pool table a T.v some really old couches and a pinball machine.
Alas, we made it to our cramped and dirty room four hours later. It had a tinsy winsy bathroom and there was no shower tray so when we showered ...

A great place to stay - 2nd Attempt!
Advantages: In the middle of the action Disadvantages: Some rooms are small
...We have stayed at the Atlanta on Rembrandtplein on more than one occasion.
We love it as it is so close to everything, the floating flower market and main shopping area are within 3 or 4 minutes walk. There are great pubs, restaurants and a nightclub on the doorstep. Next to the entrance to the hotel there are cafes with outdoor seating which is a lovely way to spend a couple of hours just absorbing the atmosphere. Leidseplein and the Museums are ... ...warmer months.
GENERAL
The Atlanta is classed as a 2 * Hotel and is offered regularly on Internet Hotel sites at varying prices. We have always paid between £50 and £70 night, including breakfast. The price does vary quite a lot, we have always paid a higher rate for staying Friday & Saturday nights. I have always used the same dutch online booking company (hotel bookings nl) and found them to be reliable and competitive, especially if booking ...

top location in adam.
Advantages: central location and homely Disadvantages: the trams at night, ask for room at rear
...for a mid price range hotel in the heart of Amsterdam you could do a lot worse than the Citadel.
Located on the busy NZ VOORBURGWAAL it is in walking distance of all the major attractions,2 minutes from Dam square,in the same street virtualy as the OUDEkerk, and it has a tram stop right outside the front door.
The citadel is a small hotel which ofers overnight and breakfast at about £45 per night ,whilst there are cheaper places to stay in the ... ...luxuries like in house t.v.,one price for all day viewing.
The rooms are small,i have only had a single room, but adequate with en suite and tea making facilities. The breakfast area is a bit cramped and is located opposite the also small reception but i feel this lends to the homely atmosphere .I found the staff to be freindly and helpfull and on the day i checked out let me leave my belongings in the safehold whilst i went into the city to kill ...
