A Hotel with Vaa Vaa Voom!
Advantages: Very comfortable and right in the centre Disadvantages: none
...stay at the Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza. It is right in the centre of the city just down from the Central Station. Dam Square is on the corner and the canals, shops and museums are all very close by. The hotel itself has 270 bedrooms and they are all furnished to the highest standards with mini bar, television and all the usual commodities. We were on the top floor and had a fantastic view at night, but it did get rather cold in the room and they had ... ...period and the weather outside was very cold so it was understandable. There is a fitness centre with a pool, sauna and solarium and we used it a couple of times. I liked the thick white fluffy towelling robes that they provided. (I didn't pinch one when I left I swear it!) Ladies be careful if you use the changing rooms. I was busy drying myself and an Italian chap with his two teenage sons just strolled into the ladies changing room to use a sauna, ...

How the other half live!
Advantages: Affordable luxury, great hotel. Disadvantages: Looking a bit dated.
...a nice trip.
Hotel Bilderberg Garden is about 2 and a half miles (if you know your way) from the heart of Amsterdam, in the district called the Old South. This is quite a 'well heeled' area and has some fantastic, if expensive shopping areas and resturaunts, as well as some nice archtiecture. Trams (number 5) go straight into town, though we walk everywhere; twenty minutes walking gets one to the Rjiks museum, 35-40 minutes, into KalvertStraat (centre).
... ...fantastic deal, with buffet breakfast and ferry tickets via Hull (we live in Yorkshire) for around £700, bearing in mind that the cheapest rooms are normally around £70 per person, per night, and breakfast is 19 Euro per person.
There was only 29 people in the hotel on xmas day, fab. The hotel is very much a business orientated hotel, meeting rooms etc., and as we left we noticed a plethora of Saabs, Volvo's and BMW's parked outside as it was a ...

Lovely serene place to stay
Advantages: Luxurious surroundings, clean room, excellent service, good value. Disadvantages: A bit of a distance from the centre but trams were quick and frequent.
In light of your comments I've added some more details, as suggested. Hope this is more helpful!
When we went for a weekend in Amsterdam with another couple we got a great deal for two standard rooms at this hotel via Expedia. Situated at the junction of several canals in a quiet neighbourhood, the place is pretty much surrounded by water so all the views were lovely and there's a really serene atmosphere. From the exterior, the hotel looks slightly ... ...there's a fantastic koi pond outside the front door, all set in a sort of rockery hillock which you can walk through and around. As soon as we walked in to the attractive lobby it felt opulent, with beautiful floral displays everywhere. The staff were great and the service impeccable. During the short wait for our rooms (we wanted rooms next door to each other), we visited the Lounge Bar and had coffee and cakes while looking over the canal. Everything ...

Long gone glory
Advantages: Great location at Damrak square, inexpensive for a "5-star" hotel Disadvantages: Old-fashioned interieur & run-down furniture, no goodwill when complaining about bad room condition
I have stayed several times in the Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky in Amsterdam and I always thought it's a nice affordable 5-star hotel. The location is unbeatable, it lies just opposite the royal palace on Damrak Square. It's only one or two stops from the central station, if you are travelling light, you can even walk which will take you about 10 minutes.
The downside of the location is that Damrak Square is full of drug dealers - they sell not the ... ...stuff.
The hotel itself consists of a whole block of buildings which historically were merged into the the hotels body. So you will find a lot of different room types. The most expensive ones are high ceiling rooms facing Damrak Square. The interieur of the rooms is at least 20 years old, if not older.
Few people know that the Krasnapolsky also offers apartments for long term stays. By chance I was able to stay in one of those for a few days and ...

the finest hotel in amsterdam
Advantages: beutifull water front setting, central location, quallity service Disadvantages: expencive, a bit of a trek from centraal station if your on foot
...guide pointed out the pulitzer hotel as "the finest hotel in amsterdam" and I would have to agree with him. It's central enough that anything in the city centre is within walking distance, yet far enough away that the endless bragades of drunken idiots on hen and stag do's are not on your doorstep. so in short, if your going to amsterdam to experence the local culture and or the local coffie shop produce then the pulitzer is the place to stay, a ... ...than you had expected, the hotel terminus is exelent aswell, but much cheaper, it has a more central location, but this brings with it the problems of stag do's / hen nights, but if you like to be right in the thick of it so to speak, this is an exelent choice.
also, it would be a crime to go to the dam without visiting the wrld renownd abraxis coffie shop, which is just behind dam square down a little back ally ...
