Exceptional service in the capital of "Don't Care"

Advantages: Super service, nice rooms
Disadvantages: Not everyone will like the temporary nature of parts of the hotel

Arrival and Check In We arrived by taxi from the airport - it took about 10 minutes and I can't say what it cost as I managed to stitch up the colleague I was with who was going on to the Mercure and so fell foul of the 'last one out picks up the bill' rule. My first impressions were mixed because the Novotel is currently undergoing a major renovation programme and the reception is camped out in what appears to be a marquee. I've had some ...
...so I was a bit nervous when I realised what was going on at this one. However, the charm and friendliness of the place soon put me at ease. The receptionist was astonishingly friendly which for any hotel in the Dutch capital (a city renowned for it's stroppy staff in a country with the worst 'don't give a damn' attitude in Europe) was a refreshing change. I have had several serious bust-ups with receptionists in Amsterdam hotels over the years ranging ...

Good hotel for the price.

Advantages: Good hotel, central location
Disadvantages: expensive for food

My wife and I stayed here in July 2006, we had 4 nights here booked seperatley with a KLM flight. And yes were were having a kiddless adult break. I would NOT recommend anyone really to take their kids to Amsterdam although there were plenty out and around in the town. The hotels location is great, being very central, just over the road from the central train station. (We got off the plane at Schipol and on to the train within the airport straight ...
...* official standard and it really is. The reception is well laid out, plush and nice staff. The bar is very close to the reception adjoining the restaurant. The bar was really nice. A low bar with small sunken seats. Again the staff were really nice and made you very welcome. The rooms were typical of 4* standard. They do not disapoint. Well laid out rooms (Mini bar is expensive, but hey your on ya hols) Tv with really good porn channel!! (You have ...

Expensive and not very nice

Advantages: very well located
Disadvantages: fucking expensive

Close to the famous Leidse Plein (the middle of the touristic night life) you find near to one of these douzends of riverarms the Dikkers en Thijs-Hotel. It's about 90 Pounds a night but don't expect a first class accomodation. Due to the poor capacity of hotels they can ask for prices which are out of this world. Your room will be not too big (to be friendly) and furniture does not give the impression of a modern styled hotel. The best message beforehand: ...
...or less). The toilets are separeted but your teeth has to be cleaned at the floor. Furthermore there is a little table in your room with two chairs an a small TV. Breakfast is available but nothing special. The real big advantage of this accomodation is their fantastic location. Almost every Tram goes through Leidse Plein and brings you in a short time to every place you want to go in AMS, and also to the main station. According to less other opportunities ...

Golden Tulip

Advantages: Location, Good Deals
Disadvantages: Over starred in my opinion

...excellent value) and found the Golden Tulip in Amsterdam offering us a room for 3 nights in their 4* hotel including breakfast for a little under 300 euros. I was sold on the executive sounding nature of the rooms, its central location, traffic free area and of course the included breakfast. We arrived at central stn a little early for our check in time of 2pm, probably somewhere near 11.30, but we turned up at the hotel anyway and asked to check ...
...(rather than on check out) and added on the 5% city tax for foreigners (keep this in mind). They were more than helpful in storing our bags for us and suggesting we could have the room a little earlier than the published time, sometime around one, which was nice. On return we checked in properly and went to the room, keycard in hand. The room was nice, clean and had all the things you would expect, tv, minibar, toiletries, etc but not what I would ...

Lovely serene place to stay

Advantages: Luxurious surroundings, clean room, excellent service, good value.
Disadvantages: A bit of a distance from the centre but trams were quick and frequent.

In light of your comments I've added some more details, as suggested. Hope this is more helpful! When we went for a weekend in Amsterdam with another couple we got a great deal for two standard rooms at this hotel via Expedia. Situated at the junction of several canals in a quiet neighbourhood, the place is pretty much surrounded by water so all the views were lovely and there's a really serene atmosphere. From the exterior, the hotel looks slightly ...
...there's a fantastic koi pond outside the front door, all set in a sort of rockery hillock which you can walk through and around. As soon as we walked in to the attractive lobby it felt opulent, with beautiful floral displays everywhere. The staff were great and the service impeccable. During the short wait for our rooms (we wanted rooms next door to each other), we visited the Lounge Bar and had coffee and cakes while looking over the canal. Everything ...
