Exceptional service in the capital of "Don't Care" Advantages: Super service, nice rooms Disadvantages: Not everyone will like the temporary nature of parts of the hotel Arrival and Check In We arrived by taxi from the airport - it took about 10 minutes and I can't say what it cost as I managed to stitch up the colleague I was with who was going on to the Mercure and so fell foul of the 'last one out picks up the bill' rule. My first impressions were mixed because the Novotel is currently undergoing a major renovation programme and the reception is camped out in what appears to be a marquee. I've had some ... ...so I was a bit nervous when I realised what was going on at this one. However, the charm and friendliness of the place soon put me at ease. The receptionist was astonishingly friendly which for any hotel in the Dutch capital (a city renowned for it's stroppy staff in a country with the worst 'don't give a damn' attitude in Europe) was a refreshing change. Good hotel for the price. Advantages: Good hotel, central location Disadvantages: expensive for food My wife and I stayed here in July 2006, we had 4 nights here booked seperatley with a KLM flight. And yes were were having a kiddless adult break. I would NOT recommend anyone really to take their kids to Amsterdam although there were plenty out and around in the town. The hotels location is great, being very central, just over the road from the central train station. (We got off the plane at Schipol and on to the train within the airport straight ... ...* official standard and it really is. The reception is well laid out, plush and nice staff. The bar is very close to the reception adjoining the restaurant. The bar was really nice. A low bar with small sunken seats. Again the staff were really nice and made you very welcome. Good hotel for a good rate, a bit out of town but accessible Advantages: rooms and no compulsorey 3 night stays, availability, good rates Disadvantages: location This hotel is inbetween the airport and Amsterdam town centre, easily accesible by bus and metro from the town centre. Has a nice foyer and dining room. Have stayed here twice on return from some exotic location at ungoldy hours of the morning. Unlike hotels in the centre, it is in a quiet residential area, and has 24 hour reception which is good for its price too. I normally take a taxi there from the airport. A Hotel with Vaa Vaa Voom! Advantages: Very comfortable and right in the centre Disadvantages: none ...stay at the Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza. It is right in the centre of the city just down from the Central Station. Dam Square is on the corner and the canals, shops and museums are all very close by. The hotel itself has 270 bedrooms and they are all furnished to the highest standards with mini bar, television and all the usual commodities. We were on the top floor and had a fantastic view at night, but it did get rather cold in the room and they had ... ...period and the weather outside was very cold so it was understandable. There is a fitness centre with a pool, sauna and solarium and we used it a couple of times. I liked the thick white fluffy towelling robes that they provided. (I didn't pinch one when I left I swear it!) Ladies be careful if you use the changing rooms. A little gem too good to be true! book NOW! Advantages: peaceful and relaxing, luxurious and so good value for money Disadvantages: none!! I mean it! ...the old town centre, the Banks Mansion is a four star deluxe hotel with 51 rooms and suite. Most of them are overlooking the canal but I wasn't so lucky! I booked this hotel last year via lastminute.com for a real bargain at 250£ for 2 nights with a delicious breakfast!!! So, ok, I didn't have a view on the canal, but it quickly became my favourite hotel in Amsterdam ever since. It is not hard to find a real gem in Amsterdam; it is after all the ... ...Well not here, not at Banks Mansion. For everything in the mini bar is ABSOLUTELY FREE. Yes!!! FREE!!! We didn't dare to touch anything at first, but we noticed a nice note saying everything was complimentary. I rung reception and they confirmed that it was indeed complimentary, and that if I wished to have a drink in the main foyer by the fireplace it was also complimentary!! Everything from little snacks to gin and Coca-Cola!!!
