I now travel via Amsterdam when ever possible as its by far the nicest and easiest to use out of all the Europehub cities including Heathrow and Gatwick.
The first time I flew was to Amsterdam and found using the airport scarey the first time. However I didnot get lost and found the airport very easy to navigate. One thing that worried me was understanding the Dutch language, but this was no problem at all as most people in the Netherlands speak very good English .All tannoy annoucements are also repeated in English as well as all the signs being in English.
Amsterdam Schipol airport is located about 15 miles away from the centre of Amsterdam. Schipol is connected with the central station in Amsterdam with a rail station beneath the terminal building. Travelling time is about 25 minutes and cost about 7 Guilders which is less than £2 pounds. The service is very good with a double deckertrain ever 15 minutes so overgrowding is not usually a problem.
Schipol Airport is home base to the Dutch National carrior KLM Royal Dutch Airlines.KLM partner airline, KLM UK connect most regional airports into the hub at Amsterdam for a lot of connecting services forward with KLM and American partner North West Airlines to destinations world wide.
One of the major problems with Amsterdam airport is one that haunts many travellers....Lost and delayed baggage!!.Amsterdam has a problem with his with the airlines know about. The connecting times are sometimes a little short at only 45 minutes, so I recommend if possible to travel on a earlier connecting flight is possible whcih is sometimes only a hour or two earlier. I always make sure that I carry a change of clothes in my hand baggage, as claiming back money for delayed baggage is a waste of time at only £25 per 24 hours delay. Make sure you also have travel insurance for any trip you make, even if only be domestic air(Example Newcastle to Birmingham) or the airline with only pay out a small price per Kilo of weight and it doesnot matter how many pairs of expensive jeans you packed.
One of the benefits of Amsterdam is that the terminal building is one huge building with different tiers labelled A to G (I think).This is a blessing to me as I hate transfering like at Heathrow from different terminal buildings.The airport itself is very clean and tidy.Services like eating and drinking factilies at the airport are excellant.
This was a very good review, although I have not enjoyed my experiences at the airport to be honest.

a user friendly op very informative so thanks bazza,i adore Amsterdam and Holland in general but have always caught the ferry,might try a fly next time in view of so many bargain fares to schipol,cheers jane
