I was pleasantly surprised by Amsterdam in the sense that I wasn't expecting this small city to be half as enjoyable as I actually found it! In brief, I thought the shopping was very good for a small city, at reasonable prices. There were also plenty of places to eat, as well as the trusty fast food places we know and love over here (just in case you lose the nerve to try some local cuisine). The red light district is well worth a visit, more for the comedy factor than anything else, both for the 'ladies of the night' in the shop windows, and for a look at the scary looking contraptions in the shops themselves! It's definately hard not to giggle down this area. Also, be careful not to be hit by a bike anywhere in the city, as the designated cycle paths are everywhere, and as tourists aren't exactly the most culture sensitive people in the world (!), it would be quite easy to be hit by one, as they cycle rather fast and expect you to move, which is really how it should be. It is also steeped in history, with several historical figures either originating or having lived in the city at one point. City tours are recommended, as the architecture is very interesting, as well as the various canals and surrounding countryside. Overall a very interesting, worth a visit city, which I'm sure has even much more to offer than my brief description here.

I remember those shops with the displays (I so much wanted to take a photo) but knew we couldn't so tried to come back later in a car which was very difficult bearing in mind how narrow the streets are and how many pedestrians there were. Really enjoyed your review, you've summarized the city very well! -CH (P.S Did you try any space cake....?)

Advantages: fantastic location, good breakfast, friendly and helpful staff, comfy bed, some character Disadvantages: rooms could be bigger, a bit shabby, breakfast not included
Advantages: Great location at Damrak square, inexpensive for a "5-star" hotel Disadvantages: Old-fashioned interieur & run-down furniture, no goodwill when complaining about bad room condition
