Our honeymoon in February 1997 consisted of three weeks in San Francisco and Tahoe. We stayed with family in San Francisco for the first week and then back packed it to South Lake Tahoe for two weeks to go skiing etc.
We had to travel by bus for around 1/2 an hour (bus service the same quality as over here) and then we boarded the Amtrak Train for approximately a 3 hour trip.
It was a double deckertrain that all luggage is safely tucked away in storage and our journey was free of moving luggage when someone wanted to pass.
We had a really wonderful time on the train, the seats were comfy, the food train was reasonably priced and toilet facilities were clean and plenty of them on the set of carriages that we were travelling on. The idea of travelling on a double decker train was new to both of us so we sat on the top deck and had a really nice view for the whole journey.
The cost of travelling in America with the train was very cheap to compare to our own country with the additional luxuries not costing more over there.
With having a load of bags/suitcases we found it very easy to get on and off the trains as there were no steps to the platform outside. This making it very attractive for disabled people and people travelling with childre.
On each side of the carriage was an electronic screen showing the name of the station that we were approaching and the ticket controller was actually very friendly (not like the ones we have over here).
We also found that the stations that we waited at to get on the train in very clean condition with plenty of seating/waiting areas available.
Everything was on time and each stop was timed and therefore no delays.
We were a little worried as we had an arranged bus to catch after the train ride and needn't have worried as everything was well time kept.
I certainly would recommend that if you ever visit America that you must try the Amtrak Service (even for a jolly down the road).

I'm travelling from Los Angeles to Shelby (Montana) - a two day train journey, so your info has been useful

A really great & helpful op. Like you, I've travelled on Amtrak, but my experiences were quite different - I was on the East Coast though, & you were on the West. A very helpful op though.
